Valerie Lavin Honored as Army Noncommissioned Officer of the Year by Greater Tampa Chamber of Commerce

Tampa, FL – March 2014 – Valerie Ellis Lavin, then serving as a First Sergeant in the U.S. Army, has been honored as the Army Noncommissioned Officer (NCO) of the Year by the Greater Tampa Chamber of Commerce at their annual Military Appreciation Banquet. This prestigious award recognizes exceptional leadership, dedication, and contributions to military excellence within the Tampa Bay region.

The event, held on March 4, 2014, and presented by Bright House Networks, brought together more than 400 attendees, including leadership from all five service branches. Vice Admiral Mark Fox, Deputy Commander of U.S. Central Command, delivered the keynote address highlighting Tampa's deep historical ties to the military community.

Ms. Lavin (listed in official records as Master Sergeant Valerie A. Ellis) was selected among distinguished honorees across branches for her exemplary service. She retired later that year after 21 years, having held key leadership roles including Squad Leader, Platoon Sergeant, First Sergeant for units such as the 339th Military Intelligence Company and Bravo Company, 4-3 Brigade Support Troops Battalion, as well as US CENTCOM J2 Army Enlisted Leader and US CENTCOM Commandant Headquarters First Sergeant. Her career included deployments to Korea and Iraq, earning her the Bronze Star Medal, Defense Meritorious Service Medal, and numerous other commendations.

The Greater Tampa Chamber of Commerce's NCO of the Year award highlights noncommissioned officers who embody Army values of loyalty, duty, respect, selfless service, honor, integrity, and personal courage—qualities Ms. Lavin demonstrated throughout her tenure, particularly while stationed at MacDill Air Force Base in Tampa as part of U.S. Central Command.

This recognition marked a pivotal moment just prior to her transition from active duty to civilian life in 2014, where she would later channel her military-honed discipline into veteran advocacy and founding Luminary Global in 2016.

"The values instilled in me as an NCO—duty, discipline, and dependability—continue to guide everything I do," said Valerie Ellis Lavin. "This honor from the Greater Tampa Chamber reflects the teamwork and commitment of the soldiers I had the privilege to lead."
