Quick Overview

The AO Eyewear Original Pilot Sunglass is a professional-grade personal protective equipment item designed to reduce solar glare, block UVA/UVB radiation, and preserve accurate color perception for operators conducting aviation, vehicle, and extended field operations during daylight hours.

The Original Pilot Sunglass is built around chemically-hardened True Color glass lenses available in Grey or Green tint. These lenses filter 98% UVA and 100% UVB radiation while maintaining zero optical distortion, a critical capability for instrument reading, target identification, and accurate perception of traffic signals and brake lights. The scratch-resistant glass construction supports field durability across extended deployment cycles.

The bayonet temple design is the primary feature enabling integration with operational headgear. The straight, flat metal alloy arms slide directly between the head and helmet, headset, or ear cup without displacing primary headgear or compromising the seal of hearing protection. This design eliminates pressure points during extended wear and allows rapid donning and doffing without removing communications equipment.

Operators must understand the limits of this eyewear before deployment. The Original Pilot Sunglass is rated for incidental impact only and does not meet ANSI Z87.1 or MIL-PRF-32432 ballistic standards. It must not be used in environments with fragmentation or high-velocity impact hazards. The aviator frame also has known peripheral coverage gaps at the sides, top, and bottom, which operators should assess against environmental conditions prior to mission execution.

Field Application Steps

1. PRE-DEPLOYMENT INSPECTION, LENSES: Remove the eyewear from its protective case and inspect lenses for cracks, deep scratches, or delamination. Minor surface scratches are acceptable only if they do not interfere with the central field of view.

2. PRE-DEPLOYMENT INSPECTION, FRAME AND NOSE PADS: Inspect the frame for bends, cracks, or broken solder joints and confirm hinge screws are tight and temple arms are straight. Verify nose pads are present, secure, and undegraded.

3. LENS CLEANING: Using an approved microfiber lens cloth or lens cleaning solution, clean both lenses with a circular motion from center outward to remove smudges, dust, or abrasive particles that could cause distracting internal reflections during operation.

4. DON PRIMARY HEADGEAR FIRST: Before putting on the eyewear, fully don and secure all primary headgear, including helmets, communications headsets, or protective ear muffs, to their operational position.

5. DONNING WITH HEADGEAR: Grasp the eyewear frame with both hands and position the lenses in front of the eyes. Slide the straight bayonet temples directly back between the side of the head and the headgear or ear cups.

6. FITMENT CONFIRMATION: Settle the nose pads on the bridge of the nose and confirm the temples rest comfortably above the ears without displacing headgear or breaking the seal of hearing protection. Verify an unobstructed field of view before proceeding to mission.

7. DOFFING PROCEDURE: Grasp the frame with both hands and pull straight forward to remove. Do not lever the temples outward, as this risks displacing communications headgear.

8. POST-USE INSPECTION AND STORAGE: Immediately inspect for new damage or contamination such as sweat or dust. Clean as required using the approved protocol, place the eyewear into its designated semi-rigid protective case, secure the closure, and stow the case in a designated accessible location away from extreme heat sources such as vehicle dashboards.
