The Tracker IV operates across three detection modes: ALL-METAL for maximum depth surveys, DISCRIMINATION for filtering ferrous trash, and TONE mode for two-tone audio identification of ferrous versus non-ferrous targets. The unit's Automatic Ground Trac feature reduces false signals in low-to-moderately mineralized soil, making it deployable in damp or varied ground conditions. The 8-inch concentric search coil is fully submersible for shallow water operations, while the control housing must remain dry at all times to prevent electronic failure.

Field deployment follows a five-phase protocol: assembly and inspection, power-up with sensitivity calibration, systematic grid search in 3-to-4-foot lanes, target pinpointing using an X-pattern sweep, and careful excavation with full site restoration. Sensitivity should be set at the highest stable threshold without generating audio chatter from ground minerals or electromagnetic interference. Operators should carry spare 9V alkaline batteries, as performance degrades measurably as voltage drops.

The Tracker IV is not rated for forensic evidence recovery, EOD support, or Technical Search and Rescue missions requiring high-sensitivity professional equipment. It is appropriate for training, recreational use, and preliminary grid searches where target depth precision is not a primary mission requirement. All operators are responsible for legal compliance, including obtaining landowner permission and adhering to laws governing excavation at historically or archaeologically protected sites.

Field Application Steps

1. PRE-DEPLOYMENT INSPECTION: Visually inspect all components for cracks, loose fittings, or damage. Check the coil cable for cuts or abrasions and confirm the connector is tight and undamaged.

2. BATTERY INSTALLATION AND ASSEMBLY: Install two fresh 9V alkaline batteries in the correct polarity orientation. Connect the lower stem to the search coil, attach the upper stem to the control housing, wind excess coil cable snugly around the stem, and plug the connector firmly into the control housing.

3. STEM ADJUSTMENT AND ERGONOMIC FIT: Adjust the stem between 44.5 and 51 inches so the coil sweeps comfortably in front of your feet without requiring you to bend over. Place your forearm in the padded armrest cuff so sweep motion originates from the shoulder, not the wrist.

4. POWER-UP AND SENSITIVITY CALIBRATION: Turn the SENSITIVITY knob clockwise past the audible click to power on. Set the mode toggle to TONE, hold the coil in the air, increase sensitivity until a light steady hum is heard, then reduce counterclockwise just until the sound stops to establish maximum stable sensitivity.

5. GRID SEARCH EXECUTION: Begin at one corner of the search area and establish parallel lanes approximately 3 to 4 feet wide. Sweep the coil side to side at 2 to 3 feet per second, maintaining a consistent 1 to 2 inch height above the ground, and step forward 4 to 6 inches at each sweep end to ensure full coil coverage. Overlap lanes slightly to eliminate gaps.

6. TARGET PINPOINTING: Upon receiving a clear, repeatable signal, stop forward movement. Make a short X-pattern over the signal area and identify the loudest, sharpest response point as the target's center. In TONE mode, a low tone indicates ferrous metal such as iron or steel; a high tone indicates non-ferrous metal.

7. TARGET RECOVERY AND SITE RESTORATION: Set the detector aside and carefully excavate a soil plug beside the pinpointed location. Scan both the removed plug and the open hole with the coil to confirm target location, then visually identify the object before handling. Replace the soil plug and restore the surface, leaving the area undisturbed.

8. POST-OPERATION SUSTAINMENT: Power down the unit upon grid completion. Wipe the entire detector with a clean, damp cloth using no chemical solvents, and thoroughly remove mud, sand, and vegetation from the search coil and lower stem. If storing longer than 30 days, remove both 9V batteries to prevent leakage and terminal corrosion, and store the unit in a climate-controlled, low-humidity environment protected from physical shock.
