Quick Overview

The Elite First Aid Scalpel Handle #3 is a professional-grade, reusable stainless steel instrument handle used by trained and certified medical, veterinary, or laboratory personnel to perform precise surgical incisions in clinical and field settings.

The Handle #3 is a component part, not a stand-alone treatment device. It accepts compatible blades in sizes #10, #11, #12, and #15, secured through a keyed fitment mount that prevents blade rotation or slippage under operational pressure. The handle's textured grip surface provides positive, non-slip control even when wearing surgical gloves wet with fluids. Bulk packaging delivers 50 individually sterile units per case, supporting clinical stocking, field hospital deployment, and multi-unit kit readiness.

Sterility protocol is a critical operational variable with this instrument. Each handle arrives in an individual sealed pouch, and packaging integrity is the sole guarantee of sterility prior to deployment. Once opened, maintaining sterility depends entirely on the operator executing proper aseptic technique throughout the procedure. Any contact with a non-sterile surface renders the handle contaminated and requires it to be removed from the sterile field.

The handle's medical-grade stainless steel construction allows re-sterilization via autoclave under institutional reusable protocols, but the operator or institution assumes full liability for sterilization efficacy. This instrument is designed solely for precise tissue incision. Applying lateral force or using it for any unintended purpose risks blade fracture, creating a projectile and sharps hazard. Scope of practice restrictions are absolute: this instrument is not appropriate for general first aid and must never be deployed by untrained personnel.

Field Application Steps

1. PRE-DEPLOYMENT INSPECTION: Verbally confirm the correct procedure and anatomical site before opening any packaging. Inspect the individual sterile pouch for tears, punctures, water damage, or compromised seals, and confirm sterility indicators and expiration date if present. Do not use the handle if packaging integrity is in any way compromised.

2. ASEPTIC PRESENTATION: Using the designated peel-apart tabs, open the sterile pouch without making contact with the handle itself. Allow the handle to drop directly onto the established sterile field and ensure it does not contact any non-sterile surface from this point forward.

3. BLADE ATTACHMENT: Confirm sterile gloves are properly donned before handling any blade. Using a hemostat or needle driver, grasp the sterile blade along its dorsal, non-cutting spine only. Never use fingers to hold the blade. Align the blade slot with the #3 fitment mount and slide it forward until it clicks fully into the seated position, then tug gently with the hemostat to confirm the blade is locked and will not rotate or slip.

4. PROCEDURE EXECUTION: Perform the incision or surgical procedure in strict accordance with your medical training and institutional protocols. Maintain continuous awareness of blade position throughout the procedure.

5. SCALPEL TRANSFER: If transferring the assembled scalpel to another operator, do so through a designated neutral zone such as a tray, or use clear verbal cues while presenting the handle end first toward the receiving operator. Never pass a scalpel blade-first under any circumstances.

6. POST-PROCEDURE BLADE REMOVAL: Using a hemostat or approved blade removal device, grip the blade at its base near the fitment mount. Lift the heel of the blade slightly and push it forward, away from your body and all personnel present, until it fully disengages from the handle. Immediately deposit the detached blade into an approved sharps container without setting it down or carrying it to another location.

7. HANDLE DISPOSAL OR DECONTAMINATION: Dispose of the handle as a single-use item or process it for re-sterilization via autoclave in accordance with your institution's validated decontamination protocol. Document the instrument's disposition per your facility's inventory and sustainment records.
