Quick Overview

An Individual First Aid Kit (IFAK) is a single-casualty trauma treatment system that enables operators to control life-threatening hemorrhage, manage airway compromise, and address respiratory collapse at the point of injury in environments where definitive medical care is delayed.

The Elite Professional GP IFAK is built around the M.A.R.C.H. algorithm, the recognized protocol for treating the major preventable causes of death in traumatic incidents. Core hemorrhage control capability is delivered through a NAR CAT Gen7 Tourniquet, QuikClot EMS Hemostatic Dressing, and an Israeli Emergency Bandage, providing field-ready intervention for both limb wounds and junctional injuries where a tourniquet cannot be applied. Airway and respiration management is supported by a Nasopharyngeal Airway with lubricant and a Hyfin Vent Compact Chest Seal Twin Pack for treating open penetrating chest wounds.

Deployment is facilitated by a rip-away MOLLE pouch that separates from its mounting platform with one hand, allowing immediate placement at the casualty's side without removing the operator from the threat environment. The kit also includes an emergency blanket for hypothermia prevention, EMT shears for exposure, nitrile gloves for PPE, and utility components including a penlight, triangular bandage, burn dressings, and burn gel. Advanced surgical tools, including a suture set, scalpel, curved hemostat, and iris scissors, are included exclusively for credentialed medical personnel operating within their authorized scope of practice.

Monthly readiness inspection is required to maintain kit integrity. Operators must verify full inventory, check expiration dates on QuikClot, chest seals, NPA lubricant, and burn gel, confirm packaging sterility, and test tool function on the shears, penlight, and tourniquet hardware. Proficiency with this kit requires formal training through recognized courses such as TCCC, TECC, or Stop the Bleed. Possession of the equipment does not confer the competence to use it.

Field Application Steps

1. SCENE SECURITY AND PPE: Confirm the immediate area is safe before approaching the casualty. Don nitrile gloves before making any physical contact to prevent cross-contamination.

2. KIT DEPLOYMENT AND EXPOSURE: Release the security buckle and pull the IFAK pouch firmly from the MOLLE panel. Use EMT shears to cut clothing from ankle to hip, fully exposing the injured area before assessing wounds.

3. HEMORRHAGE CONTROL: For limb wounds, apply the CAT Gen7 Tourniquet high and tight above the wound and tighten the windlass until bleeding stops. Secure the windlass, engage the time strap, and record the exact time of application. For junctional wounds to the groin, shoulder, or neck where a tourniquet cannot be placed, pack the QuikClot hemostatic dressing directly into the wound cavity and secure it with the Israeli Emergency Bandage.

4. AIRWAY ASSESSMENT: If the casualty is talking, the airway is clear. If the casualty is unconscious, perform a head-tilt chin-lift or jaw thrust to open the airway. Deploy the Nasopharyngeal Airway only if trained to do so and only if no signs of head trauma are present.

5. RESPIRATION CHECK AND CHEST SEAL APPLICATION: Inspect both the chest and back for open or penetrating wounds. If a sucking chest wound is identified, apply the first Hyfin Vent Chest Seal to the entry wound and the second seal to the potential exit wound on exhalation, ensuring the vented surface allows air to escape without re-entry.

6. CIRCULATION REASSESSMENT: Reassess all prior interventions, confirming tourniquet effectiveness and checking for any secondary wounds that were not addressed in the initial sweep.

7. HYPOTHERMIA PREVENTION: Wrap the casualty in the emergency Mylar blanket to reflect radiant body heat. This step is critical even in warm environments, as hemorrhagic shock significantly compromises the body's ability to regulate temperature.

8. EVACUATION AND HANDOFF: Maintain continuous observation of the casualty's status until evacuation. Communicate all interventions, including tourniquet placement time and wound locations, to incoming medical personnel. Do not deploy surgical components including the suture set, scalpel, hemostat, or iris scissors unless you are a credentialed medical professional operating within your authorized scope of practice.
