Quick Overview

The FST-11 Folding Survival Tool is an 11-function compact entrenching tool designed for individual operators who need light-duty digging, cutting, and breaking capability in field environments where full-sized pioneering tools are unavailable.

The FST-11 delivers a consolidated set of capabilities in a 1.5-pound stainless steel package built for contingency deployment from a vehicle, go-bag, or hiking pack. Its primary operational roles include vehicle recovery from mud and snow, hasty field sanitation, fire pit construction, and general preparedness tasks. The tool is not a replacement for dedicated engineering equipment and must be operated within its structural limitations to prevent failure.

Eleven integrated functions are grouped across four operational categories: primary earth-moving implements including a shovel head, hoe configuration, pick, and locking collar; secondary utility tools including a saw edge, hammer surface, nail puller, wrench cutout, and bottle opener; a handle assembly containing a waterproof match container and button-style compass; and a MOLLE-compatible camouflage carry pouch. The locking collar is the single critical component during active use. It must be fully tightened and verified before operation, as a loose collar presents a direct impact and laceration hazard to the operator.

Sustained readiness for the FST-11 requires after-action cleaning of all debris and moisture, lubrication of pivot points and collar threads with machine oil or CLP, and quarterly inspection of the head, handle, hinge, saw edge, and match container. The integrated compass provides gross cardinal orientation only and is not suitable for primary land navigation.

Field Application Steps

1. RETRIEVE AND UNPACK: Remove the FST-11 pouch from its stowed location in the vehicle or pack. Open the pouch and extract all folded tool components.

2. ASSEMBLE THE HANDLE: Screw the handle segments together firmly until each section is fully seated. Do not begin deployment until the handle assembly is complete and solid.

3. DEPLOY THE TOOL HEAD: Unfold the shovel head from its stored position against the handle to bring it into an operational orientation.

4. CONFIGURE FOR TASK: For breaking compacted, rocky, or frozen soil, position the pick pointing down and tighten the locking collar until the head is completely immobile. For digging and scooping, position the head at 180 degrees for shovel configuration. For pulling material from under a vehicle chassis, lock the head at 90 degrees for hoe configuration, which is operationally superior for that task.

5. SECURE THE LOCKING COLLAR: Hand-tighten the locking collar with maximum force. Visually inspect and physically test the head to confirm it does not wobble. This is a mandatory safety check and must not be skipped.

6. EXECUTE THE TASK: Clear earth, snow, or mud from around the affected tires using controlled strokes appropriate to the head configuration in use. If roots are present, engage the saw edge using steady, controlled strokes only.

7. STOW THE TOOL: Loosen the collar, fold the head to its stored position, and re-tighten the collar to secure it for carry. Disassemble the handle segments if required for your pack configuration.

8. PERFORM AFTER-ACTION SERVICE: Clean all dirt, mud, and moisture from the tool with particular attention to the locking collar threads and all pivot points. Dry the tool completely before returning it to the carry pouch.

9. LUBRICATE AND INSPECT: Apply a light coat of machine oil or CLP to the pivot points and locking collar threads. Inspect the shovel head, pick, and handle for cracking, bending, or deformation, and verify the collar spins freely and tightens securely before returning the tool to service.
