Quick Overview

The EVAC Systems Charlotte Pocket Pack (EP439) is a purpose-built equipment carriage system designed to house and organize a firefighter's personal escape rope, descender, and anchor hook within the thigh pocket of standard turnout gear for last-resort emergency egress.

The Charlotte Pocket Pack is a carriage system, not a complete bailout system. Its operational value lies in organizing a specific, preconfigured loadout, consisting of 50 feet of 7.5mm Sterling FireTech2 escape rope, a Sterling FCX descender, and a Sterling Lightning GT or Stealth hook, in a predictable, repeatable configuration that a trained operator can deploy with a single, positive motion under zero-visibility, high-stress conditions. The in-pocket design eliminates the snag hazard of externally mounted bags while protecting components from environmental contamination.

The pack's internal architecture is engineered for indexed, no-look deployment readiness. A dedicated internal hook pocket and elastic retention loop hold the anchor in a consistent upright orientation. The descender flap protects the FCX handle from accidental activation while ensuring it is the first component accessible upon opening. The top deployment strap unifies the entire hardware assembly into a single cohesive unit, calibrated to release with a firm upward pull, freeing all components simultaneously.

Readiness sustainment protocols are tiered across daily, weekly, and monthly intervals. Daily checks confirm pack presence and correct hardware orientation by feel. Weekly checks address Velcro adhesion, exterior condition, and hardware staging integrity. Monthly protocols require full system breakdown, component inspection per manufacturer guidelines, and repack per Section 3.1 to combat rope memory. All monthly inspections must be logged in the departmental equipment log without exception.

Field Application Steps

1. INSPECT THE SYSTEM: Visually and tactically inspect the bag, all stitching, the 50 feet of 7.5mm Sterling FireTech2 rope, the Sterling FCX descender, and the Sterling Lightning GT or Stealth hook per manufacturer guidelines and departmental policy before every pack.

2. PACK THE ROPE: Flake the full 50 feet of FireTech2 rope into the main compartment with no twists or knots. Pack tightly and evenly to fill the 6.5 inch by 7.5 inch by 1.25 inch compartment, ensuring calibrated compression holds the rope securely for smooth, controlled payout.

3. STAGE THE ANCHOR HOOK: Insert the body of the Sterling Lightning GT or Stealth hook into the internal hook pocket. Stretch the elastic retention loop over the upper portion of the hook to secure it in a vertical, indexed position for no-look grip acquisition.

4. STAGE THE DESCENDER: Connect the Sterling FCX descender to the anchor hook. Place the connected descender on top of the flaked rope and fold the internal Velcro descender flap down over it to protect the handle from accidental activation.

5. SECURE THE ASSEMBLY: Close the top deployment strap over the entire hardware stack. Confirm it is secure and unified, but not so tight that it compromises the calibrated single-pull release.

6. STOW THE PACK: Insert the fully packed Charlotte Pocket Pack into your designated turnout pant thigh pocket. Confirm the pocket is clear of all other equipment and that the rigid hardware stack is oriented at the top of the bag.

7. CONFIRM DAILY READINESS: At the start of every shift, feel the exterior of the turnout pocket to confirm the packed bag is present and the rigid hardware stack is correctly oriented at the top.

8. EXECUTE EMERGENCY DEPLOYMENT: Reach into the turnout pocket and obtain a firm, positive grip on the unified hardware assembly. Pull upward in a single, deliberate motion. The top deployment strap releases and the hook and descender come free as one unit while the rope pays out from the bag, which remains in the pocket.

9. ANCHOR AND EGRESS: Move immediately to the anchor point, deploy the hook, and execute your bailout procedure per your certified training. Do not improvise anchor placement or descender operation under emergency conditions.
