Quick Overview

The EVAC Systems First Responder Knee Board is a field-ready documentation platform used by flight medics, paramedics, EMTs, and tactical EMS personnel to record patient vitals, interventions, and PCRs on a stable surface during mobile or austere operations.

The Knee Board is constructed from 1000D Cordura nylon and mounts to the operator's thigh via a wide elastic strap with Velcro closure, enabling hands-free deployment across moving vehicles, helicopters, and active scenes. The integrated mini clipboard secures Patient Care Reports and notepads against rotor wash, high winds, and vehicle vibration. Internal side flaps expand the workspace to a full 19.5-inch width and store protocol cards, GCS/APGAR charts, and radio frequency lists for immediate field reference.

Deployment follows a four-phase protocol: pre-deployment configuration, field donning, operational use, and post-use securing. During configuration, the operator loads agency-approved reference materials, inserts a minimum of two writing instruments into dedicated elastic slots, and affixes a fresh PCR or notepad to the clipboard. Donning is performed on the mid-to-upper thigh of the non-dominant leg, with strap tension confirmed through a test squat or kneel before engagement.

Post-use procedures are not optional. Closing the Cordura side flaps upon mission completion is a required HIPAA compliance action, shielding Protected Health Information from public view. Decontamination after patient contact requires an EPA-registered, hospital-grade disinfectant wipe. The unit must air dry completely before storage, and prolonged UV exposure must be avoided to prevent degradation of the nylon body and elastic strap.

Field Application Steps

1. LOAD REFERENCE MATERIALS: Before your shift or mission, insert agency-approved protocol cards, local maps, GCS/APGAR charts, or radio frequency lists into the internal side pockets of the Knee Board.

2. EQUIP WRITING INSTRUMENTS: Insert a minimum of two writing instruments, such as a black ink pen and a permanent marker, into the designated elastic pen and marker slots to ensure immediate access during patient assessment.

3. PREPARE THE CLIPBOARD SURFACE: Affix a stack of blank notepad paper or a fresh Patient Care Report to the mini clipboard, confirming the clip mechanism holds documents securely before deployment.

4. STOW FOR RESPONSE: Close the Knee Board and place it in a designated, readily accessible location within your primary response bag or vehicle so it is retrievable immediately upon arrival at scene.

5. POSITION ON THE THIGH: Retrieve the Knee Board and place it on the mid-to-upper portion of your thigh. Use your non-dominant leg as the preferred platform to keep your dominant hand free for writing.

6. SECURE THE LEG STRAP: Route the wide elastic strap around your thigh and close it using the Velcro closure, ensuring the board sits flat and centered without rotation.

7. CONDUCT A TENSION CHECK: Confirm the strap is snug enough to prevent sliding during movement but not tight enough to impede circulation or cause discomfort. Perform a test squat or kneel to verify stability before engaging the scene.

8. DEPLOY THE WORKSPACE: Once in position to document, unfold the Cordura side flaps to reveal the full 19.5-inch work surface and expose stowed reference materials for immediate access.

9. DOCUMENT AND REFERENCE: Use the clipboard surface to record vitals, intervention times, patient demographics, and all required PCR fields. Access internal pockets to confirm dosages or protocols without diverting attention to search a bag.

10. PROTECT PHI AND SECURE THE BOARD: When documentation is complete or when moving the patient, fold the side flaps inward to shield Protected Health Information from public view. This is a required HIPAA compliance action, not an optional step.

11. DOFF AND STOW: Release the Velcro strap and stow the Knee Board in its designated location when immediate documentation is no longer required for the mission.

12. DECONTAMINATE AND INSPECT POST-MISSION: Wipe all surfaces with soap and water or an EPA-registered, hospital-grade disinfectant wipe. Do not use bleach. Air dry completely before restocking with fresh forms, verifying strap elasticity, Velcro closure integrity, clipboard clip tension, and Cordura body condition before returning the unit to service rotation.
