Quick Overview

The EVAC Systems Fire Hydrant Pack is a load-bearing tool carrier used by engine company firefighters to consolidate and rapidly deploy hydrant connection equipment from the apparatus to the water source during structural, industrial, and rural firefighting operations.

The EP190 and EP191 series are built from 1000 Denier Cordura nylon, providing the structural rigidity to carry gate valves, Storz adapters, wyes, and wrenches without sagging or collapsing. The EP190 (18") accommodates a standard hydrant tool compliment, while the EP191 (21") handles oversized tool loads including large-diameter Storz adapters and extra-long wrenches. Available in Black, Blue, and Red, both models support departmental color-coding protocols for multi-company operations. Tools are not included and must be sourced by the user agency.

The pack's external wrench pockets are the critical readiness feature of this system. They provide immediate access to the hydrant wrench and spanner wrenches without opening the main compartment, which is the correct deployment sequence. The adjustable shoulder strap is designed to be worn over structural firefighting PPE, distributing load across the torso and keeping both hands free during transport to the hydrant.

Operator readiness depends on pre-loading the pack per departmental policy before apparatus departure and completing a post-incident inspection after every use. The structured Cordura walls protect brass fitting threads from grit and moisture during transport and keep tools organized at the hydrant base. Weekly and monthly inspection of stitching, shoulder strap integrity, hardware function, and material condition is required to maintain the pack in field-ready status.

Field Application Steps

1. PRE-LOAD CONFIGURATION: Load the gate valve and wye into the main compartment per departmental policy. Place the adjustable hydrant wrench and two spanner wrenches into the external pockets before apparatus departure.

2. STAGING ON APPARATUS: Store the pre-loaded pack in the designated apparatus location, typically the tailboard or the side compartment assigned to water supply equipment, where it is immediately accessible on arrival.

3. DON THE PACK: Sling the shoulder strap over one shoulder and across the torso. Confirm the strap is clear of all SCBA straps and other equipment before proceeding.

4. TRANSPORT TO HYDRANT: Proceed directly to the designated hydrant at speed. The pack's load-bearing design maintains stability during movement with a full tool load.

5. POSITION THE PACK: Place the pack upright at the base of the hydrant. The structured Cordura walls will prevent collapse, keeping all tools organized and accessible throughout the operation.

6. INITIAL TOOL ACCESS: Retrieve the hydrant wrench from the external pocket first. Do not open the main compartment at this stage.

7. HYDRANT OPERATIONS: Use the hydrant wrench to remove the steamer and pumper caps. Inspect the ports and clear any debris before making connections.

8. CONNECTION AND FINALIZATION: Retrieve the gate valve and adapters from the main compartment. Affix all fittings and tighten couplings with the spanner wrenches. Stow all tools in the pack upon completion for full equipment accountability.

9. POST-INCIDENT INSPECTION: Empty the pack completely after each use. Remove all dirt, gravel, or debris from the interior, wipe exterior and interior surfaces with a damp cloth if contaminant exposure occurred, and allow the pack to air dry completely before re-stowing on the apparatus.
