Quick Overview

The EVAC Systems Firefighter Duffel (Model EP046) is a high-capacity, single-compartment cargo carrier engineered for firefighters and emergency operators to transport mission-essential PPE, sustainment gear, and specialized rescue tools across station, field, and extended deployment scenarios.

The EP046 is constructed from 1000 Denier Cordura Nylon, providing high-abrasion resistance and water-resistant durability across rough handling environments. A full-length heavy-duty zipper allows wide-mouth loading of bulky, irregularly shaped gear such as helmets attached to turnout coats. The deliberate absence of internal dividers maximizes usable volume, with load organization remaining the operator's responsibility. The system is available in a Large (31.5") configuration for PPE and sustainment loads, and an Extra Large (57") variant purpose-built for long-format rescue tools including pike poles, stabilization struts, and tripods.

Readiness depends on proper pre-deployment inspection and disciplined packing protocol. The operator must inspect all seams, zipper teeth, web handle stitching, and plastic hardware before each deployment. Packing sequence follows a deliberate priority: heavy and rigid items placed at the bottom and center for a low center of gravity, soft compressible goods filling voids to prevent load shift, and quick-access items staged near the zipper opening for immediate retrieval in the field.

Post-operational sustainment keeps the bag mission-ready through its service life. After each deployment, the bag must be fully emptied, brushed clean, and spot-washed with mild soap and water. Machine washing and bleach are prohibited, as both degrade the water-resistant coating and material strength. The bag must be air-dried completely before storage and kept away from direct UV exposure to prevent nylon degradation over time.

Field Application Steps

1. PRE-DEPLOYMENT INSPECTION: Visually and physically inspect all seams for fraying or separation, then operate the zipper through its full range of motion to confirm no missing or damaged teeth. Check shoulder strap attachment points, web handles, and all plastic hardware for cracks or deformation before loading anything.

2. LOAD PLANNING AND STAGING: Lay out all required equipment outside the bag before packing begins. Separate items into two categories: heavy and rigid items such as boots, hard hats, and toiletry kits that will form the structural base, and soft compressible items such as clothing and sleeping bags that will fill voids.

3. BASE LAYER PACKING: Place all heavy and rigid items at the bottom and center of the bag to establish a low center of gravity. Distribute weight evenly from side to side to prevent the bag from tilting or shifting during carry.

4. VOID FILL AND LAYER BUILD: Pack soft goods around and above the base layer, filling all dead space to prevent load movement and protect rigid items from contact damage in transit. Ensure no sharp edges or tool points are left unpadded or unsheathed, as they can puncture the bag from the inside.

5. QUICK-ACCESS STAGING: Pack the last items to go in as the first items you will need, such as a rain jacket or fresh socks, positioning them directly beneath the zipper opening for immediate retrieval without disturbing the full load.

6. TRANSPORT AND CARRY SELECTION: For loads exceeding 50 lbs, use the reinforced web handles, keep your back straight, and lift with your legs. Two-person carry is recommended at extreme weights. For longer distances, attach the shoulder strap and adjust it so the bag sits at the hip or small of the back to minimize sway and preserve situational awareness.

7. POST-DEPLOYMENT UNLOAD AND INSPECTION: After every deployment, completely empty the bag and shake out all interior dirt and debris. Conduct a detailed inspection of seams, webbing at all attachment points, plastic buckles, metal clips, and zipper teeth before clearing the bag for storage or reuse.

8. CLEANING AND DRYING: Spot-clean soiled areas using a stiff brush with water and mild soap such as dish soap. Do not machine wash or apply bleach or industrial detergents, as these degrade both the water-resistant coating and the structural integrity of the nylon. Air dry the bag completely before storage.

9. STORAGE: Store the clean, fully dried bag away from direct sunlight and extreme temperatures, as UV exposure degrades nylon over time. The bag may be rolled or folded for compact storage when not in use.
