Quick Overview

A rope bag is a compact deployment system that stores and rapidly delivers a life-safety descent rope, enabling a trained operator to execute a controlled self-rescue egress from a compromised building when all primary exit routes are blocked or untenable.

The EVAC Systems Personal Escape Kit Model C is a single-person, last-resort emergency egress system rated for descents of up to 40 feet, approximately three to four stories. The kit contains two Omega Pacific "D" screwgate carabiners, one 40-foot Sterling 8mm NFPA rope, one Belay Rescue 8 descender, and the Model C EP401 deployment bag. The rope is flaked into the bag so it pays out cleanly when dropped from the egress point, eliminating tangles that could compromise a descent under duress. A rated escape harness or belt is required for system operation and is not included.

Anchor selection is the most critical decision in the deployment protocol. A structural anchor capable of supporting bodyweight manifold, such as a heavy desk, bed frame, or structural column, is required. Plumbing pipes, sprinkler heads, and movable furniture are prohibited anchor points. If no bombproof anchor is available, the system cannot be deployed.

Rope readiness and inspection are non-negotiable elements of sustainment. The 40-foot lifeline must be inspected inch-by-inch for cuts, frays, discoloration, and stiff sections on a quarterly basis and before any deployment. Any operational use, including a full bodyweight training descent, permanently retires the rope from life-safety service. The rope and bag carry a maximum service life of 10 years from the date of manufacture regardless of use history.

Field Application Steps

1. ASSESS THE EGRESS POINT: Retrieve the EP401 kit and move to the window or egress point. Evaluate the exterior below for hazards including fire, power lines, and debris, and confirm the 40-foot rope is sufficient to reach the ground. If the distance to the ground exceeds 40 feet, do not deploy.

2. IDENTIFY AND SECURE A STRUCTURAL ANCHOR: Select a bombproof anchor capable of supporting your bodyweight manifold, such as a heavy desk, bed frame, or structural column. Never use plumbing pipes, sprinkler heads, or movable furniture. Attach the rope end-loop to the anchor using one carabiner, close the gate fully, and confirm the connection visually and physically.

3. DEPLOY THE LIFELINE: Toss the entire rope bag out of the egress point. The weight of the bag pulls the rope to its full 40-foot length in a controlled, tangle-free deployment. Visually inspect the rope's path along the exterior for fouling on ledges, glass, or other obstructions.

4. DON THE ESCAPE HARNESS: Put on your pre-fitted, inspected rated escape harness or belt. Double-check all buckles and connections before proceeding. A non-rated harness, clothing belt, or improvised attachment is a lethal substitution and is never acceptable.

5. RIG THE DESCENDER: Pull a bight, a U-shaped section, of rope near your position at the egress point. Pass the bight through the large ring of the Rescue 8 descender, then loop it over and around the small ring at the horns. Clip the second carabiner through the large ring, capturing the bight, then attach the carabiner to your harness connection point and lock the gate.

6. PRE-TENSION AND VERIFY THE SYSTEM: Grasp the rope below the descender firmly with your brake hand before exiting. While still positioned inside the building, apply your full body weight to the system to test the anchor and all connections under load. Do not commit to exiting until the system is fully weighted and verified as secure.

7. EXECUTE THE DESCENT: Move through the egress point and begin descending with your feet against the wall for stability. Apply a tighter grip with the brake hand to slow descent and ease your grip to increase speed. Descend in a controlled, deliberate manner, keeping your brake hand on the rope below the descender at all times until your feet are on the ground.
