Quick Overview

The Evac Systems RIT Staging Mat is a dual-function tool carrier and staging platform used by Rapid Intervention Teams to transport, organize, and deploy a predetermined cache of rescue equipment during firefighter down emergencies.

The mat addresses one of the most critical failure points in RIT operations: equipment accountability under pressure. Constructed from 1,000 Denier Cordura nylon in high-visibility orange, the system measures 55 by 67 inches when fully deployed and provides a defined staging boundary that remains visually identifiable in low-light and smoke conditions. Five reinforced pockets secure the heads of long-handled forcible entry tools, preventing shifting and entanglement during transport. The central staging surface accommodates a RIT pack, TIC, rope bags, and cylinders in a standardized, muscle-memory-based layout.

Transport is designed for two-person carry using dual heavy-duty webbing handles positioned at each end of the rolled bundle. Two adjustable compression straps with thumb-release snap hooks secure the rolled configuration and can be operated single-handed with gloved hands, maintaining speed and control during approach to staging. Upon arrival, releasing both snap hooks allows a single push or kick to fully unroll the mat and establish the tool deck immediately.

Secondary applications extend the mat's capability beyond RIT, including use as a tool deck for vehicle extrication equipment, a designated surface for roof operations, and an equipment organization platform for technical rescue and search and rescue scenarios.

Field Application Steps

1. CONFIRM STANDARD LOADOUT: Verify the mat is loaded per your department's RIT SOP before leaving the apparatus. The standard load consists of a Halligan bar, flat-head axe (married), pick-head axe, bolt cutters, and pipe pole seated in the five designated reinforced pockets.

2. LOAD LOOSE GEAR: Place the RIT pack, search rope bag, and all other designated loose equipment in the center of the mat on top of the secured long-handled tools.

3. INSPECT HARDWARE BEFORE ROLLING: Verify the integrity of both thumb-release snap hooks before securing the bundle. A cracked or non-functional buckle can cause catastrophic failure of the carrier system during transport, spilling tools and delaying deployment.

4. SECURE FOR TRANSPORT: Tightly roll the mat with tool heads remaining fully seated in their pockets. Engage both thumb-release snap hooks and cinch both compression straps tight to produce a compact, stable bundle.

5. ASSIGN CARRY TEAM AND MOVE TO STAGING: Two RIT members take the dual carrying handles, one at each end. Proceed to the designated staging point as directed by Command. Two-person carry prevents the bundle from swinging or snagging obstacles in a cluttered environment.

6. SELECT DEPLOYMENT ZONE: Choose a surface that is as flat and clear as possible. The zone must be out of the primary ingress and egress path but remain immediately accessible for RIT members retrieving tools.

7. PLACE, UNCLIP, AND UNROLL: Set the mat down and release both thumb-release snap hooks. A single push or kick fully unrolls the mat, positioning the tool pockets at one end and the open staging surface at the other.

8. ESTABLISH THE TOOL DECK: Organize all equipment immediately upon unrolling. Long tools go into designated pockets. The RIT pack, TIC, lights, and rope bag are positioned in a standardized layout that supports muscle memory under stress. Any tool removed from the deck must be returned to its designated position immediately upon task completion.

9. CONDUCT POST-INCIDENT INSPECTION: After each use, perform a full visual and tactile inspection of the mat body for punctures, rips, or tears; check all webbing handles and straps for fraying or cuts; examine stitching around pockets and handles; and confirm snap hooks are functional and uncracked.

10. CLEAN AND STORE PROPERLY: Remove loose debris with a stiff-bristled brush and clean soiled areas with mild soap and water. Rinse thoroughly and allow the mat to air dry completely before rolling and storing. Do not use chlorine bleach or harsh solvents, as they degrade nylon fibers and compromise structural integrity. Store in the rolled and secured configuration in a designated apparatus compartment, protected from sharp objects.
