Quick Overview

The EVAC Systems SCBA Cylinder Cover EP308 is a high-visibility, 1000D Cordura nylon protective sleeve designed for use by fire-rescue, industrial emergency response, and hazardous materials operators to shield SCBA cylinder composites from abrasion, UV degradation, and surface damage during transport, storage, and active deployment.

The EP308 serves a dual operational purpose. Its primary function is sacrificial protection of the cylinder's external carbon fiber wrap and resin layer against friction from apparatus seats, mounting brackets, and fireground debris, a condition commonly called station rash. By absorbing that wear, the cover extends the service life of a high-value pressure vessel asset. Its secondary function is personnel visibility. The high-visibility yellow Cordura fabric provides a distinct visual reference point for team integrity, incident command accountability, and Rapid Intervention Team operations in low-light or smoke-filled IDLH environments.

Installation protocol requires a pre-installation inspection of both the cover and the uncovered cylinder per NFPA 1852 before any cover is seated. The wider opening orients toward the valve end, and the cover is worked upward until elastic edges are fully seated without impinging on the neck, valve, or regulator assembly. A complete re-integration and function check is mandatory after every installation, confirming that no fabric bunches between the cylinder and backplate and that harness straps adjust without restriction.

Operators must understand the cover's defined limitations. It provides no thermal, chemical, or ballistic protection and does not augment the cylinder's structural integrity or pressure rating. Because the fabric obscures the cylinder surface, the cover must be fully removed during all periodic and annual SCBA inspections to allow direct assessment of cylinder condition, hydrostatic test date, and manufacturer labeling.

Field Application Steps

1. UNPACK AND INSPECT THE EP308: Remove the cover from packaging and conduct a visual and tactile inspection. Confirm no manufacturing defects, rips, tears, or seam separation are present, and verify that the elastic openings retain full tension and elasticity.

2. INSPECT THE CYLINDER BEFORE COVERING: Perform a standard visual inspection of the bare SCBA cylinder per NFPA 1852 and departmental policy. Check for deep gouges, delamination, and chemical damage, and confirm the hydrostatic test date is current. Do not install the cover on any cylinder that is out of service.

3. REMOVE THE CYLINDER FROM THE BACKPLATE: Detach the target cylinder from the SCBA backplate to allow full, unobstructed access for cover installation. This step ensures even seating and prevents misalignment during fitment.

4. ORIENT THE COVER CORRECTLY: Position the cover with the wider opening facing the valve end of the cylinder. Incorrect orientation will prevent proper seating and may cause interference with the valve assembly.

5. SLIDE AND SEAT THE COVER: Feed the cover over the base of the cylinder and work it upward evenly toward the neck and valve assembly. Continue until the cover is fully seated, fabric is smooth with no bunching, and elastic edges are secured at the top and bottom without impinging on the neck or valve.

6. RE-INSTALL THE CYLINDER INTO THE BACKPLATE: Reattach the covered cylinder to the SCBA backplate. Confirm it is fully seated and secured by the mechanical latch or retention strap per the SCBA manufacturer's specification.

7. VERIFY CLEARANCES: Visually and manually confirm the cover does not interfere with harness straps, the waist belt, regulator hoses, or any other SCBA component. No fabric may be bunched or compressed between the cylinder and the backplate.

8. PERFORM FULL DONNING AND FUNCTION TEST: Don the complete SCBA assembly and cinch all straps to operational tightness. Confirm full, unrestricted movement at all harness adjustment points. The cover must not bind, snag, or impede any harness function before the unit is returned to service.
