1. ACTIVATE HAZARDS AND ASSESS THE SCENE: Turn on hazard lights immediately upon stopping. Before opening any door, assess traffic conditions from inside the vehicle.
2. DON THE HIGH-VISIBILITY SAFETY VEST: Put on the high-visibility safety vest before exiting the vehicle. This is your primary defense against being struck by passing motorists and must not be skipped under any conditions.
3. PLACE THE D.O.T. REFLECTING TRIANGLE: Assemble the reflecting triangle and place it on a stable surface approximately 50–100 feet behind your vehicle on the same side of the road to provide early warning to oncoming drivers.
4. DEPLOY THE EMERGENCY HELP BANNER: If assistance is needed, secure the "Emergency Help" banner to a clearly visible part of your vehicle to signal passing motorists and emergency services.
5. CLEAR THE EXHAUST PIPE BEFORE RUNNING THE ENGINE: If the vehicle is snow-entrapped and you intend to run the engine for heat, use the shovel to clear snow from around all four tires, the undercarriage, and critically the exhaust pipe to prevent lethal carbon monoxide buildup in the cabin.
6. DEPLOY THERMAL PROTECTION: Wrap the solar blanket tightly around your body to reflect body heat and reduce heat loss. Layer the high-visibility highway blanket over the solar blanket for additional insulation. Activate hand warmers and place them in gloves or pockets to maintain hand dexterity for repairs and signaling.
7. JUMP-START A DEAD BATTERY: Position a functional vehicle close to the disabled vehicle without allowing them to touch. Attach one RED clamp to the POSITIVE (+) terminal of the dead battery, then the other RED clamp to the POSITIVE (+) terminal of the good battery. Attach one BLACK clamp to the NEGATIVE (-) terminal of the good battery, then the final BLACK clamp to an unpainted metal surface on the engine block of the disabled vehicle, away from the battery. Run the functional vehicle for 2–3 minutes, attempt to start the disabled vehicle, then remove all cables in reverse order.
8. APPLY FLAT TIRE FIXER: Position the tire so the puncture is at the 6 o'clock position. Shake the canister vigorously, screw the nozzle firmly onto the valve stem, and press the button to dispense the entire can's contents into the tire. Immediately drive 2–4 miles at low speed to distribute the sealant and seal the puncture.
9. EXECUTE TOW ROPE RECOVERY: Attach the tow rope to designated tow points on both vehicles only. Direct the recovering vehicle to pull slowly and steadily — sudden jerks can damage both vehicles or snap the rope.
10. TREAT MINOR INJURIES: Use the 34-piece first aid kit to address cuts and abrasions with adhesive bandages, gauze pads, and antiseptic wipes. Use included work gloves to protect hands during all vehicle repairs. Monitor all personnel continuously for signs of frostbite and hypothermia and prioritize warmth above all other actions.
11. INSPECT AND RESTORE KIT READINESS AFTER USE: Immediately replace all consumed items including first aid supplies, flat tire fixer, light sticks, and hand warmers. Conduct a full 54-component inspection every six months, replace flashlight batteries annually regardless of apparent condition, and complete a full inventory check before each winter season begins.
