Quick Overview

A fire hose roll bag is a structured vinyl transport system used by firefighters and rescue operators to carry coiled attack lines, hydraulic lines, or rope systems hands-free, enabling rapid single-operator deployment in structural, wildland, SAR, and extrication operations.

The Luminary Hose Roll Bag is built around a 22 oz. vinyl body measuring 22 by 22 inches, sized to accept standard hose coils without specialized folding. The open-top design allows the hose to pay out with minimal resistance or kinking when the coupling is pulled. A critical structural feature is the underslung strap configuration, which routes the shoulder strap beneath the bag body so load weight transfers through the webbing rather than through seams, preventing seam failure under heavy, wet loads.

Capacity limits are defined by hose diameter: approximately 100 feet of 2.5 or 3-inch hose, or 200 feet of 1.5-inch hose. A fully loaded bag can exceed 50 to 70 pounds. The bag is rated for uncharged hose only. Over-stuffing causes deployment failure and places excessive stress on seams that are not designed to bear direct load.

Readiness is maintained through post-mission inspection of strap anchor points, stitching, and buckle hardware, followed by full air drying before restowage. The vinyl body is decontaminable following HAZMAT exposure. Bags should be labeled with contents using a permanent marker or stencil to ensure correct equipment selection under incident conditions.

Field Application Steps

1. INSPECT THE BAG: Conduct a visual and tactile inspection of the vinyl body, shoulder strap, stitching, and buckle hardware. Confirm all components are free of tears, abrasion, deformation, or signs of seam weakening before loading.

2. INSPECT THE HOSE OR LINE: Verify the hose is clean, undamaged, and dry unless immediately redeploying from a prior deployment. Do not load frozen hose, as it will impede payout and create a deployment failure at the objective.

3. COIL THE HOSE: Tightly coil the hose into a circular donut roll that fits within the 22 by 22 inch bag footprint. Keep the coil uniform to ensure smooth, tangle-free payout.

4. LOAD THE SYSTEM: Place the coiled hose flat into the bag. Position the male coupling at the top opening so it is immediately accessible without repositioning the load at the deployment point.

5. STAGE FOR DEPLOYMENT: Place the loaded bag in its designated apparatus compartment. Label the bag with its contents using a permanent marker or stencil, for example: 150 FOOT 1.5 INCH ATTACK or RESCUE ROPE.

6. DON THE BAG: Place the shoulder strap over one shoulder or across the body. Adjust strap length so the bag rests at the hip or back, minimizing swing during dynamic movement through stairwells, doorways, and uneven terrain.

7. CONFIRM HANDS-FREE STATUS: With the load secured and the strap adjusted, confirm both hands are fully free for tools, handrails, or victim management before proceeding to the objective.

8. NAVIGATE TO OBJECTIVE: Proceed to the deployment point. The bag is designed to allow movement through doorways and stairwells without snagging or premature uncoiling of the hose.

9. POSITION FOR DEPLOYMENT: Set the bag flat on the ground at the designated deployment point, such as behind the entry door or at the standpipe connection. A stable, flat position is required for controlled payout.

10. ACCESS THE COUPLING: Grasp the exposed male coupling at the top of the bag. This coupling was pre-positioned during loading and should be immediately accessible without searching.

11. EXECUTE PAYOUT: Walk directly away from the bag. The hose will pay out smoothly from the open top as tension is applied to the coupling. Do not shake or dump the contents, as this introduces kinks and defeats the organized coil.
