Quick Overview

A collapsible 5-gallon water carrier is a man-portable, flexible polyethylene container used by field operators, emergency preparedness personnel, and basecamp teams to transport and dispense potable water in environments where rigid containers are impractical.

The Rothco Collapsible Water Carrier deploys from a flat storage profile of approximately 10 by 10 by 3 inches to a full 19-liter capacity, allowing multiple units to occupy the space of a single rigid container. The body is semi-transparent for visual inspection of water level and gross contaminants, and the integrated on/off spigot enables controlled, gravity-fed dispensing without lifting or tilting the carrier. At full capacity, the unit weighs approximately 41.7 lbs, requiring proper lifting technique during transport.

This carrier is designed for three primary operational contexts: emergency preparedness staging within home, shelter, or vehicle kits; basecamp hydration and sanitation station establishment; and contingency water supply during extended vehicle operations in remote areas. The carrier does not purify water. All water from unverified sources must be purified through filtration, chemical treatment, or boiling before it enters the carrier or is consumed.

Post-operation sustainment requires a three-step clean, sanitize, and final rinse protocol using mild dish soap and 1 teaspoon of unscented household bleach per 5 gallons. The carrier must be completely dry before storage to prevent mold, mildew, and bacterial growth. Periodic inspection is required every six months or before any operational loadout to confirm the carrier remains mission-capable.

Field Application Steps

1. PRE-DEPLOYMENT INSPECTION: Unfold the carrier from its collapsed state and visually inspect the interior and exterior for punctures, tears, or seam delamination, focusing on creased areas. Confirm fill cap and spigot gaskets are present, free of debris, and that the spigot is in the fully "Off" position and resistant to turning.

2. EXPANSION AND POSITIONING: Remove the fill cap and fully expand the carrier, blowing air into the opening if needed to help it take shape. Place the carrier on level ground before filling. Do not hold the carrier during the fill process.

3. FILLING FROM A POTABLE SOURCE: Fill only from a confirmed potable water source. This carrier does not purify water. Leave a 2 to 3 inch air gap at the top to reduce seam stress.

4. CAP SECURITY AND LEAK CONFIRMATION: Tighten the fill cap snugly. Do not overtighten. Invert the carrier to confirm there are no leaks before transport.

5. TRANSPORT WITH PROPER LIFTING TECHNIQUE: Position your body close to the carrier, bend at the knees, and lift using your legs, not your back, using the molded top carry handle. Maintain a firm grip and account for shifting water affecting load balance. Shield the carrier from rocks, branches, and pointed equipment edges during movement.

6. DISPENSING STATION SETUP: Place the full carrier on a stable, elevated surface such as a tailgate, crate, or field table with the spigot positioned over the edge. Rotate the spigot to the "On" position and allow water to flow via gravity.

7. MAINTAINING CONSISTENT FLOW: As the water level drops and the carrier begins to collapse, slightly loosen the fill cap to vent air and maintain consistent flow from the spigot.

8. POST-USE SPIGOT SECURITY: Return the spigot to the fully "Off" position after every use without exception.

9. CLEANING AND SANITIZATION: Rinse the interior with clean water, then add a few drops of mild dish soap, partially fill, seal, and agitate vigorously. Rinse thoroughly until all soap residue is eliminated, then add 1 teaspoon of unscented household bleach per 5 gallons, seal and agitate, and allow to sit for a minimum of 5 minutes. Flow a small amount of the bleach solution through the spigot to sanitize the valve, then empty and rinse thoroughly with clean potable water until bleach odor is no longer detectable.

10. DRYING AND STORAGE: Hang the carrier upside down with the cap removed and spigot open to drain. Prop the sides open to maximize internal air circulation and allow the carrier to dry completely before collapsing flat for storage. Store in a cool, dark, dry location away from sharp objects and direct sunlight.
