Quick Overview

The Rothco GI Type LC-1 Kidney Pad is a load-bearing support component for the ALICE pack system that transfers pack weight from the shoulders to the hips, enabling operators to sustain extended movement with reduced fatigue and back strain.

The LC-1 Kidney Pad achieves superior weight distribution through its 17-inch by 5.5-inch padded surface, which spreads load across the lower back and hip region rather than concentrating pressure on the shoulders. Constructed from 600D Polyester, the pad is built for the demands of prolonged field deployment across military, backcountry, and hunting environments. Fully adjustable straps allow the pad to be fitted to most body types, creating a stable and integrated connection between the operator and the pack frame.

A durable quick-release buckle enables rapid attachment and detachment of the waistbelt, supporting fast transitions without compromising the security of the carry system. This feature is particularly relevant during patrols, reconnaissance operations, and field exercises where pack removal and re-donning must be executed without delay. The pad is also a field-ready replacement or upgrade for worn components on existing ALICE systems, restoring full load-bearing functionality to gear already in service.

Proper installation requires attaching the pad to the ALICE frame, integrating the waistbelt, donning the pack, and securing the buckle with the load already in place. The pro tip from the guide reinforces sound protocol: cinch the straps while leaning slightly forward under a loaded pack to ensure the pad seats correctly against the body under real carrying conditions.

Field Application Steps

1. ATTACH TO FRAME: Position the LC-1 Kidney Pad at the base of the ALICE pack frame and secure it using the attachment points designed for the LC-1 system. Confirm the pad is centered and seated flush against the frame before proceeding.

2. INTEGRATE WAISTBELT: Route the waistbelt through or around the frame as designed, ensuring the belt runs cleanly from the pad on both sides without twisting. The belt must be fully extended and unobstructed before the pack is donned.

3. DON THE PACK: Lift the pack onto your back and position the shoulder straps across both shoulders. Do not tighten any straps at this stage. The kidney pad should make contact with your lower back and the waistbelt should sit naturally above the hip bones.

4. SECURE THE BUCKLE: Lean slightly forward to shift the pack weight toward your hips and bring the two ends of the waistbelt together at the front. Engage the quick-release buckle and confirm it is fully locked before cinching the straps.

5. ADJUST UNDER LOAD: With the pack loaded and the buckle secured, tighten the adjustable straps on both sides of the kidney pad until the fit is snug and stable. The majority of the pack weight should rest on your hips, with the shoulder straps providing light contact rather than bearing the primary load.

6. VERIFY FIT AND STABILITY: Move through a short range of motion, including bending, stepping up, and turning, to confirm the pad is seated correctly and the pack moves with your body. If the pack shifts or the shoulder straps carry disproportionate weight, readjust the kidney pad straps before continuing.
