Quick Overview

A rope bag is a compact, field-deployable personal escape kit used by trained industrial, fire-rescue, and tactical operators to execute a controlled single-person descent from elevations up to 50 feet when primary egress routes are blocked or untenable.

The EVAC Systems Personal Escape Kit Model F is purpose-built for last-resort emergency egress in low-visibility and industrial environments. The kit integrates a 50-foot Sterling 8mm NFPA-rated static rope, a Belay Rescue 8 descender, two Omega Pacific screwgate carabiners, and a reflective deployment bag into a single belt-mounted system. Each component is matched by specification: the 8mm rope diameter is paired to the Rescue 8 friction device, and the carabiners are NFPA-compliant for the load demands of emergency descent. Reflective tape on the bag exterior increases operator visibility to search teams operating in smoke or darkness.

Deployment readiness depends on correct rigging protocol and anchor selection. The operator is solely responsible for identifying a structurally sound anchor point, such as a structural steel I-beam or engineered anchor, and must never rely on plumbing, conduit, window frames, or drywall. Screwgate carabiners must be locked using the standard protocol: screwed down until snug, then backed off a quarter turn. The confirmed descent sequence is anchor, rope, Rescue 8, harness.

Sustained readiness requires pre-shift inspection of all components. The full 50-foot rope must be inspected visually and by hand for flat spots, glazing, sheath cuts, or stiff sections, with immediate retirement if any damage is found. Carabiners and the Rescue 8 must be retired after any significant impact load, regardless of visible condition.

Field Application Steps

1. CONFIRM PRIMARY EGRESS IS BLOCKED: Verbally and physically verify that primary and secondary escape routes are compromised. Announce your intent to bail out via radio if communications are available.

2. ACCESS AND PREPARE THE KIT: Remove the Model F bag from your duty belt or harness, open it, and extract all components. Identify the anchor-end of the rope, which is typically pre-rigged to a carabiner.

3. IDENTIFY AND SECURE YOUR ANCHOR: Select a bombproof anchor point that is structurally sound and load-bearing, such as a structural steel I-beam or engineered anchor. Attach the rope-end carabiner, orient the gate facing up and away from potential snags, and lock the screwgate by screwing it snug and backing off a quarter turn.

4. INSPECT THE DROP ZONE AND DEPLOY THE ROPE: Visually clear the area below for obstructions and personnel. Drop the Model F bag with the remaining rope out of the egress point, ensuring the rope pays out without knots or tangles. Announce "ROPE!" loudly before and during deployment.

5. RIG THE RESCUE 8 DESCENDER: Attach the second carabiner to the load-bearing point on your harness and lock the screwgate. Feed a bight of rope through the large ring of the Rescue 8, loop it over the small ring, then clip the small ring to your harness carabiner. Confirm the full sequence: anchor, rope, Rescue 8, harness.

6. WEIGHT THE SYSTEM BEFORE EGRESS: Apply your full body weight to the rigged system while still in a safe position to confirm anchor integrity. Look, listen, and feel for any shift, movement, or unusual sounds before committing to descent.

7. EXECUTE CONTROLLED DESCENT: Maintain the brake-side rope in your dominant hand at all times. Exit smoothly, using your non-brake hand and feet to manage contact with the wall. To slow or stop, bring the brake rope firmly across your hip and body. To increase speed, reduce the brake angle slightly. Never release the rope.
