Quick Overview

The 2-Person Wildfire Preparedness Backpack is a self-contained 72-hour evacuation kit engineered for two individuals to manage smoke exposure, minor burns, communication disruption, and sustained survival needs during an active wildfire evacuation order.

The kit is organized across eight capability categories: personal protective equipment, critical document protection, first aid and burn treatment, food and water sustainment, light and communication, shelter and thermal regulation, tools, and hygiene. Core protective components include two dust-protection face masks for smoke and ash particulate inhalation reduction, one pair of poly-cotton gloves, and eyedrops for ash flushing. A fire-resistant pouch provides temporary document and valuables protection during evacuation. Operators must understand that the face masks address particulate matter only and provide no protection against toxic gases, vapors, or carbon monoxide.

Sustainment is calibrated for a 72-hour operational window. Two emergency food bars, each a 6-pack, provide one person's full caloric needs for the period. Twelve 4-ounce water packets deliver the survival-minimum ration of 16 ounces per person per day across three days. The crank flashlight and radio unit requires no batteries, supports AM/FM/WB reception, and provides USB phone charging capability, maintaining communication readiness when infrastructure is disrupted.

This kit is a baseline deployment system, not a long-term wilderness survival platform. Readiness is only complete when the kit is augmented with prescription medications, copies of identification, critical personal documents, cash, and spare keys. Full component inspection is required every six months, recommended in January and July, with immediate replacement of any item consumed during training or actual deployment.

Field Application Steps

1. RETRIEVE AND STAGE THE KIT: Immediately locate the pre-staged Wildfire Preparedness Backpack upon receiving a Level 3 evacuation order. You have a narrow window, prioritize retrieval before any other action.

2. ADD CRITICAL PERSONAL ITEMS: Place prescription medications, eyeglasses, cell phones, keys, and wallets into the pack or on your person. These items are not included in the baseline kit and must be added at this step.

3. DON DUST-PROTECTION FACE MASKS: Both individuals put on one dust-protection face mask immediately if smoke, ash, or dust is present in the environment. Remember these masks filter particulate matter only and provide no protection against gases, vapors, or carbon monoxide.

4. DON GLOVES IF CONDITIONS PERMIT: Both individuals put on the poly-cotton dotted gloves if time and conditions allow. The dotted palm design provides enhanced grip on rough surfaces and debris during egress.

5. EVACUATE WITH PACK ON YOUR BACK: Carry the backpack on your back to keep both hands free. Do not set it down. Proceed directly to your evacuation vehicle or pre-determined safe area, following the direction of emergency officials.

6. CONDUCT KIT INVENTORY AT SAFE HAVEN: Once in a safe location, open the pack and verify all components are present and undamaged. Identify any items that were used or compromised during evacuation for immediate replenishment.

7. ACTIVATE CRANK RADIO FOR SITUATIONAL AWARENESS: Hand-crank the flashlight and radio unit and tune to a local news or NOAA weather band channel. This device requires no batteries and is your primary information source during infrastructure disruption.

8. INITIATE WATER RATIONING PROTOCOL: Distribute no more than 2 water packets, equaling 8 ounces, per person per day. This is the survival-minimum ration across the 72-hour sustainment window. Strictly conserve.

9. ADDRESS MINOR INJURIES: Use the personal first aid kit for minor cuts and abrasions. Apply burn spray and the 2-inch by 6-inch sterile burn dressing only to superficial first-degree burns. Do not apply burn spray to broken skin. Seek professional medical attention immediately for moderate-to-severe burns, respiratory distress, or smoke inhalation.

10. DEPLOY EMERGENCY BLANKETS IF NEEDED: Issue one 52-inch by 84-inch mylar emergency blanket per person if hypothermia risk or shock is present. These blankets reflect up to 90 percent of body heat and are single-use protective assets.

11. CONFIRM DOCUMENT POUCH INTEGRITY: Verify that the fire-resistant pouch was retrieved and is stored inside the main backpack. This pouch is fire-resistant, not fireproof, and is intended for temporary protection during evacuation only.
