Quick Overview

Kemp USA 1-inch porous cloth athletic tape is a non-elastic, high-tensile strength medical tape used by athletic trainers, field medics, and first responders to immobilize joints, secure splints, and anchor dressings during training exercises, competitions, and emergency response operations.

The tape's woven cotton/polyester backing provides rigid, cast-like structural support without stretch, making it the correct tool when motion restriction is the clinical objective. Its microporous construction permits air and water vapor transmission, reducing the risk of skin maceration during extended wear. The latex-free, pressure-sensitive adhesive ensures firm adhesion under operational stress, and the serrated edges enable clean bi-directional tearing without scissors, supporting rapid deployment in time-critical environments.

Field application follows a defined protocol: the skin must be clean and completely dry before any strip is placed, as moisture, oils, and dirt significantly degrade adhesive performance. Anchor strips are applied proximal and distal to the target joint, followed by support strips such as stirrups and heel locks, and finished with circumferential closing strips applied from distal to proximal. A post-application CSM assessment, checking circulation, sensation, and motor function, is mandatory after every application to confirm the tape is not acting as a constricting band.

Each roll measures 1 inch by 10 yards and yields approximately two to three standard ankle applications. Rolls should be stored in a climate-controlled environment, kept in original packaging, and inspected before deployment by confirming the adhesive is tacky and the edges are distinct. Any roll showing contamination, moisture exposure, or degraded adhesive must be discarded before staging.

Field Application Steps

1. SCENE AND PATIENT ASSESSMENT: Confirm the scene is safe and assess the patient for additional injuries. Expose the injury site and visually inspect for deformity, open wounds, or severe swelling that would contraindicate taping.

2. SKIN PREPARATION: Clean the application area with an alcohol wipe or soap and water to remove oils, dirt, and moisture. The substrate must be completely dry before any tape is applied to ensure reliable adhesion.

3. POSITIONING: Place the patient's joint in a neutral or functionally correct position. For an ankle application, hold the joint at a 90-degree angle of dorsiflexion throughout the taping sequence.

4. PRE-WRAP APPLICATION (OPTIONAL): Apply a single smooth layer of foam pre-wrap over the application area to protect skin from direct adhesive contact and friction. Ensure there are no wrinkles in the pre-wrap layer.

5. ANCHOR STRIP APPLICATION: Apply two anchor strips circumferentially around the lower leg approximately 4 to 6 inches above the malleoli. Apply one additional anchor strip around the mid-foot. These strips serve as the structural foundation for all subsequent support strips.

6. STIRRUP APPLICATION: Run 2 to 3 stirrup strips from the medial anchor, under the heel, and up to the lateral anchor. Overlap each successive strip by half its width to build graduated support across the ankle.

7. HEEL LOCK APPLICATION: Trace a figure-8 pattern around the ankle and heel to lock the calcaneus in place. This technique requires specific hands-on training and should not be attempted by untrained personnel.

8. CLOSING STRIPS: Apply circumferential closing strips starting at the distal end and progressing proximally to cover the entire taped area. Do not apply these strips with excessive tension.

9. POST-APPLICATION CSM ASSESSMENT: Immediately assess circulation, sensation, and motor function in the toes distal to the application site. If the patient reports numbness, tingling, or increased pain, remove the tape immediately and re-apply with reduced tension.
