Quick Overview

A 2-inch self-adherent cohesive wrap is a latex-free, elastic bandage used by pre-hospital responders, athletic trainers, and first aid operators to secure sterile primary dressings and provide light compression support to injured extremities.

The cohesive wrap functions exclusively as a secondary dressing securement tool and a light compression aid. It adheres only to itself, eliminating the need for tape or clips and making it safe for use on skin, hair, and K9 patients. Its 2-inch width is optimized for extremities including wrists, ankles, hands, and forearms. It is non-sterile and must never contact an open wound directly. A sterile primary dressing must be placed over the wound before the wrap is applied.

Proper tension management is the critical variable in safe deployment of this wrap. The correct protocol is to unroll a segment before laying it against the limb, rather than stretching directly off the roll. This technique delivers controlled, even compression and reduces the risk of vascular constriction. Excessive tension can impede blood flow and lead to ischemia, nerve damage, or compartment syndrome. A mandatory Circulation, Sensation, and Motor check must be performed after every application.

This wrap is a single-use, disposable consumable. Reuse degrades cohesive properties and elasticity and introduces contamination risk. Readiness protocol requires confirming intact individual packaging pre-deployment and storing rolls in cool, dry conditions away from UV exposure and extreme temperatures. Bulk packaging contains 36 rolls per case, and First-In, First-Out stock rotation must be followed.

Field Application Steps

1. CONFIRM PRIMARY DRESSING PLACEMENT: Verify that a sterile primary dressing, such as a 4x4 gauze pad or non-adherent pad, is correctly positioned over the wound and covers all wound margins before opening the cohesive wrap.

2. OPEN AND IDENTIFY THE ROLL: Open one individually-wrapped roll and identify the start of the bandage. Inspect for contamination, material degradation, or wrapper breach before proceeding.

3. ANCHOR AT THE DISTAL POINT: Begin the wrap at the most distal point of the injured area. Complete one full pass with zero tension to anchor the bandage securely without creating a constriction point at the start.

4. SPIRAL PROXIMALLY WITH 50% OVERLAP: Wrap in a spiral pattern moving toward the body, overlapping each layer by 50%. This overlap creates a bonded, secure bandage that eliminates the failure points associated with tape or bandage clips.

5. MANAGE TENSION DURING APPLICATION: Unroll several inches of wrap before laying it against the limb. Apply slight, even tension as you lay the bandage down rather than pulling directly off the roll. This technique reduces constriction risk and distributes pressure evenly.

6. COVER THE DRESSING COMPLETELY: Ensure the wrap extends at least 1 inch beyond all edges of the primary dressing so the dressing is fully covered and protected.

7. SECURE THE TERMINAL END: Stretch the final 6 inches of the roll, tear by hand using a quick sharp pull from both sides of the desired tear point, and press the end firmly against the underlying wrap layer to bond it in place.

8. CONDUCT MANDATORY CSM CHECK: Check Circulation by confirming capillary refill under 2 seconds and that skin distal to the wrap is not pale, blue, or cool compared to the opposite limb. Check Sensation by asking the patient if they feel numbness or tingling in the fingers or hand. Check Motor by instructing the patient to wiggle their fingers to confirm distal motor function is intact.

9. BRIEF THE PATIENT ON WARNING SIGNS: Instruct the patient to report increasing pain, swelling below the wrap, numbness, tingling, coolness, or discoloration of the fingers. Direct them to loosen or remove the wrap immediately if any of these signs occur.

10. MONITOR FOR SWELLING POST-APPLICATION: If significant swelling develops after application, the wrap will not expand to accommodate it and pressure will increase to dangerous levels. Remove and reapply with reduced tension if swelling is observed.
