Quick Overview

The KEMP USA 2-Piece Spineboard Straps are a rapid patient immobilization system used by EMS, paramedics, lifeguards, and search and rescue personnel to secure an injured patient to a spineboard for safe transport while minimizing spinal motion.

The system consists of a two-piece nylon webbing assembly with a quick-release side-release buckle, loop ends for board attachment, and 72 inches of total strap length per assembly. A minimum of three strap assemblies are required for effective patient immobilization, positioned across the chest, pelvis, and lower extremities. Loop ends attach to spineboard handholds via girth hitch, creating a secure, non-slip anchor point on each side of the board. The buckle connects with an audible click and is designed for single-handed release, supporting rapid patient transfer at the receiving facility.

Deployment follows a specific sequence to maintain protocol integrity. The chest strap is applied just below the armpits using a crisscross pattern, the pelvic strap runs straight across the iliac crest as the critical anchor point, and the lower extremity strap is placed across the thighs just above the knees. Cinching runs in order from chest to pelvis to legs, with the goal of achieving firm immobilization without constriction. A post-application assessment of the patient's airway, breathing, and circulation is a required final step before movement.

The webbing and hardware are constructed from nylon and plastic, making the system impervious to rust and resistant to water absorption. This material profile supports deployment in aquatic environments and all-weather conditions, which is a core capability for lifeguard and water rescue operators.

Field Application Steps

1. STAGE YOUR STRAPS: Lay out a minimum of three strap assemblies and designate one each for the chest, pelvis, and lower extremities before placing any strap on the patient.

2. ATTACH MALE BUCKLE HALF TO BOARD: Feed the loop end of the male buckle half through a handhold on one side of the spineboard, then pass the buckle through the loop using a girth hitch to create a secure, non-slip anchor point.

3. ATTACH FEMALE BUCKLE HALF OPPOSITE: Attach the corresponding female buckle half loop end to the handhold directly across the board on the opposite side. Repeat this process for all three strap pairs, confirming buckle halves are aligned across the board before continuing.

4. APPLY CHEST STRAP: Drape the chest strap across the patient's upper chest just below the armpits using an X or crisscross pattern for the torso. Connect the buckle until you hear an audible click confirming engagement.

5. APPLY PELVIC STRAP: Drape the pelvic strap straight across the patient's iliac crest. Connect the buckle. This is the critical anchor point and must be positioned accurately before moving to the legs.

6. APPLY LOWER EXTREMITY STRAP: Drape the lower extremity strap across the thighs just above the knees and connect the buckle. A fourth strap across the shins may be added for additional leg stability when protocol or patient condition requires it.

7. CINCH IN SEQUENCE: Tighten straps in order: chest first, then pelvis, then legs. Pull the loose webbing tail on each male buckle side until the patient is firmly secured. The goal is immobilization, not constriction.

8. ASSESS AIRWAY AND CIRCULATION: Immediately after cinching, assess the patient's respiratory effort by checking chest rise and fall and, for conscious patients, asking them to take a deep breath. Re-assess distal pulses at the radial and pedal sites.

9. SECURE LOOSE TAILS: Tuck or bundle all loose strap tails to prevent snagging during movement and transport.

10. EXECUTE PATIENT RELEASE: Upon transfer to a hospital gurney or definitive care surface, squeeze the sides of each buckle to release. Buckles are designed for single-handed operation to expedite this process at handoff.
