Quick Overview

The Kemp USA 3-inch Porous Cloth Athletic Tape is a high-tensile, non-stretch medical securement device used by athletic trainers, EMS personnel, and tactical operators to immobilize major joints, anchor trauma dressings, and reinforce splints in field and clinical environments.

The 3-inch width is a deliberate design decision that maximizes surface area contact per pass, reducing total application time and wrap count on large joints and splint constructs. The non-stretch woven cloth backing resists deformation under load, making it capable of restricting pathological joint motion during transport. Its aggressive, latex-free adhesive maintains a secure bond on skin, underwrap, and equipment even in the presence of diaphoresis, which is a critical capability in trauma and tactical deployment scenarios.

The microporous construction permits air and water vapor transmission, reducing skin maceration and irritation during extended wear. Machine-cut serrated edges allow clean, bidirectional hand-tearing without scissors, enabling rapid one-person application when time and personnel are limited. These features combine to make this tape a field-ready securement solution rather than a standard athletic product.

This tape is a securement device, not a wound dressing. It must never be applied directly over open wounds or burns, and its non-stretch properties create a meaningful tourniquet risk if circumferential wraps are applied too tightly or swelling develops after application. Post-application circulation checks are a required protocol element, not an optional step.

Field Application Steps

1. SITE PREPARATION: Expose the injured limb if tactically feasible. Remove gross contaminants such as dirt and debris from the skin surface. Do not apply tape directly over open wounds. Place a sterile dressing over any wound before proceeding.

2. SPLINT PLACEMENT: Position the rigid splint to immobilize the joints both above and below the suspected fracture site. Assign one operator to maintain continuous manual stabilization of the limb and splint throughout the application.

3. INITIAL SECUREMENT, PROXIMAL AND DISTAL: Apply a single circumferential wrap well proximal to the injury site and a second wrap well distal to it. Use firm pressure, not constricting pressure. These anchor wraps establish splint position before primary securement begins.

4. PRIMARY SECUREMENT: Apply additional circumferential wraps beginning at the distal anchor and working proximally toward the body. Overlap each pass by at least 50% to create a laminated, high-strength layer. The 3-inch width reduces the total number of passes required to achieve full coverage.

5. TERMINATION: Tear the final strip cleanly using the serrated edge. Press the terminal edge firmly against the underlying tape to prevent snagging during movement. Smooth all applied tape surfaces by hand to ensure complete adhesion and eliminate air gaps.

6. POST-APPLICATION CIRCULATION ASSESSMENT: Immediately assess distal circulation by checking capillary refill in the fingernails, skin color, finger temperature, and any patient-reported numbness or tingling. If any sign of circulatory compromise is present, cut and loosen the tape immediately. Reassess distal circulation at regular intervals throughout transport.
