Quick Overview

The Kemp USA 3x3 Sterile Gauze Pad is a 100% cotton, multi-ply wound dressing used by first responders, law enforcement, and prepared operators for wound cleaning, initial dressing application, and controlled bleeding management in field and clinical settings.

The gauze pad is designed around a sealed peel-down pouch that maintains sterility until the moment of deployment. Its folded-edge construction keeps raw cotton fibers from depositing into the wound bed, reducing the risk of foreign body reactions, infection, and delayed healing. These features make it a reliable primary contact layer for abrasions, lacerations, and moderate exudate wounds across Fire-Rescue, EMS, Search and Rescue, and general preparedness applications.

Operational limitations are clearly defined in the protocol. This pad is not intended for massive hemorrhage control, wound packing by untrained personnel, dry application to significant burns, or use as a tourniquet. For life-threatening arterial or venous bleeding, a hemostatic dressing or trauma bandage is the appropriate tool. Wound packing is restricted to trained and authorized personnel under established medical protocols.

Readiness sustainment requires monthly visual inspection of all carried pouches, confirming integrity, dryness, and valid expiration dates. Storage must be in a cool, dry, climate-controlled environment protected from direct sunlight and crushing. Personal and team kits carry a defined PAR level, and a kit is not considered mission-ready until all gauze pads have been restocked to that level following any operational use.

Field Application Steps

1. SCENE SAFETY AND BSI: Confirm the scene is safe and the hazard is secured before making patient contact. Don non-latex medical gloves at minimum before proceeding.

2. WOUND EXPOSURE AND ASSESSMENT: Fully expose the injury site and visually inspect for gross contamination, embedded foreign bodies, and signs of arterial bleeding such as pulsatile spray. This procedure applies to non-arterial bleeding only.

3. PREPARE EQUIPMENT: Establish a clean, dry surface. Retrieve a minimum of two sterile gauze pouches, irrigation fluid (sterile saline or potable water), and securing materials such as medical tape or a roller bandage.

4. ASEPTIC OPENING TECHNIQUE: Grasp the peel-down corner tabs and pull apart fully without touching the sterile pad inside. Allow the pad to drop onto your clean surface or gloved palm with no contact on non-sterile surfaces.

5. WOUND CLEANING: Saturate the first pad with irrigation fluid. Wipe from the center of the wound outward in a single smooth motion and discard the used pad. Repeat with additional pads until all visible debris is cleared.

6. APPLY PRIMARY DRESSING: Open the second pouch using the same aseptic technique. Apply the fresh, dry, sterile pad directly onto the wound bed, ensuring complete coverage of the injury.

7. SECURE THE DRESSING: Secure the pad with medical tape on all four sides or wrap with a roller bandage. The dressing must be snug but must not impede circulation. Confirm distal pulse and capillary refill after securing.

8. REASSESSMENT AND DISPOSITION: Check for bleed-through. If the pad becomes saturated, do not remove it. Apply a second pad directly on top and maintain direct pressure. Advise the subject to seek further medical evaluation and dispose of all contaminated materials in a biohazard receptacle.
