Quick Overview

The Kemp USA Sterile Petroleum Gauze Dressing is a non-adherent primary wound dressing used by first aid-trained operators to protect minor burns, abrasions, and low-exudate wounds during field dressing application.

The dressing's petrolatum-impregnated fine mesh gauze serves a precise tactical function: it creates a non-adherent interface between the wound bed and the secondary absorbent dressing, maintaining a moist healing environment while preventing tissue adhesion. This allows for atraumatic dressing changes that protect granulation tissue and reduce patient pain. The fine mesh carrier conforms to irregular body surfaces without shedding lint or fibers into the wound. It is indicated for first and second-degree burns, superficial abrasions, skin graft sites, lacerations with minimal drainage, and low-exudate chronic ulcers.

Field deployment of this dressing requires a layered system. The petroleum gauze functions as the primary wound contact layer only. A sterile secondary absorbent dressing placed over it handles exudate management, and the system is secured with medical tape or rolled gauze applied with enough firmness to hold without restricting circulation. The 3 x 9 inch format can be folded or cut with sterile scissors to fit smaller wound surfaces, giving operators flexibility in the field.

This dressing is not a hemostatic agent and must never be used to control moderate to severe bleeding. It is contraindicated for third-degree burns, heavily exuding wounds, and any wound with suspected infection unless directed by a medical professional. Sterility is non-negotiable: any foil packet that is opened, damaged, or compromised before use must be removed from service immediately.

Field Application Steps

1. CONFIRM SCENE SAFETY AND DON BSI: Ensure the environment is safe before initiating wound care. Put on nitrile gloves or appropriate Body Substance Isolation before making any contact with the patient or wound.

2. PERFORM WOUND HYGIENE: Gently but thoroughly flush the wound bed with sterile saline or clean water. Pat the surrounding intact skin dry, but do not dry the wound bed itself.

3. SELECT AND STAGE EQUIPMENT: Identify your Kemp USA Petroleum Gauze Dressing, a sterile secondary absorbent dressing such as 4x4 gauze pads or an ABD pad, and your securing method such as medical tape or rolled gauze. Confirm the foil packet is sealed and undamaged before proceeding.

4. OPEN THE PRIMARY DRESSING PACKAGE ASEPTICALLY: Grasp the peel-tabs of the foil packet and peel open carefully to expose the sterile petroleum gauze. Do not touch the dressing surface with your gloved fingers.

5. APPLY THE PRIMARY DRESSING: Using sterile forceps or by handling only the edges of the dressing, lay the petroleum gauze directly over the entire wound surface. Ensure full contact with the wound bed and a slight overlap onto the surrounding healthy skin. Fold or cut with sterile scissors to fit smaller wounds as needed.

6. APPLY THE SECONDARY DRESSING: Place a sterile absorbent secondary dressing directly over the petroleum gauze layer. This layer absorbs exudate and provides cushioning and mechanical protection to the wound site.

7. SECURE THE DRESSING SYSTEM: Secure the complete dressing with medical tape or rolled gauze, firm enough to hold position but not tight enough to restrict circulation. For any circumferential wrap applied to a limb, check distal pulses and capillary refill immediately after application to confirm adequate circulation.

8. MONITOR FOR INFECTION AND CIRCULATION COMPROMISE: Following application, monitor the wound at each dressing change for signs of infection including increasing redness, swelling, pain, purulent discharge, or fever. If any of these signs develop, remove the dressing immediately and have the patient evaluated by a medical professional.
