Quick Overview

Kemp USA BZK Antiseptic Towelettes are single-use, alcohol-free antiseptic wipes used by first responders, industrial safety personnel, and school health staff to clean minor wounds and reduce infection risk when soap and running water are unavailable.

Benzalkonium Chloride, the active agent in these towelettes, delivers broad-spectrum topical antiseptic action without the stinging or tissue damage associated with isopropyl alcohol. This makes the BZK formula the standard choice for pediatric patients, individuals with sensitive skin, and facial injuries where operator control over patient comfort directly affects compliance and outcome. Each towelette is sealed in an individual foil and poly packet that maintains sterility and prevents evaporation until the moment of deployment.

The deployment protocol is built around a single critical technique: wiping from the wound edge outward in a continuous motion using a fresh surface of the towelette on each pass. This procedure physically pulls contaminants away from the wound bed rather than redistributing them, which is the most common error in field wound cleaning. One towelette is designated per wound, and the BZK solution is allowed to air dry before a sterile dressing is applied.

Readiness for this supply depends on monthly inspection of individual packets for seal integrity and moisture retention, strict adherence to expiration dates using a First In, First Out rotation, and staged distribution from the master case to satellite locations and IFAKs. The 1,000-count case configuration, structured as ten dispenser boxes of 100 units each, supports both fixed first aid stations and systematic resupply of individual field kits.

Field Application Steps

1. SCENE SAFETY AND PPE: Confirm the area is safe and mitigate any ongoing hazards before approaching the patient. Don nitrile or latex gloves as minimum personal protective equipment before contact with the wound.

2. WOUND ASSESSMENT: Visually inspect the injury to confirm it is a minor, external wound with no embedded objects, arterial bleeding, or deep tissue involvement. BZK towelettes are indicated for superficial cuts, scrapes, and abrasions only. Do not proceed with this protocol on deep puncture wounds, animal bites, severe burns, or wounds involving muscle or bone.

3. HEMORRHAGE CONTROL: If bleeding is present, apply gentle but firm direct pressure over the wound using a sterile gauze pad and hold until bleeding stops. Do not use the BZK towelette for pressure or hemorrhage control. Cleaning begins only after bleeding is controlled.

4. PACKET INSPECTION: Verify the foil and poly packet is fully sealed with no punctures, tears, or flat and brittle texture indicating a dry towelette. Check the expiration date. Discard any compromised or expired packet immediately and open a replacement.

5. OPEN AND UNFOLD: Grip the packet on either side of the tear notch and pull firmly to open. Remove the towelette and unfold it completely to maximize usable surface area for cleaning.

6. WOUND CLEANING: Wipe from the wound edge outward in a single continuous motion. Use a fresh section of the towelette on each pass. Do not wipe contaminated surrounding skin back into the wound bed. Use one towelette per wound.

7. AIR DRY: Allow the BZK solution to air dry completely on the wound surface before applying any dressing. Do not blot or wipe the solution off.

8. DRESS THE WOUND: Apply a sterile dressing that fully covers the wound and secure it appropriately.

9. DISPOSAL AND DOCUMENTATION: Dispose of all used materials, including the towelette, packet, and gloves, in a biohazard receptacle. Advise the patient to monitor for signs of infection: redness, swelling, discharge, or increased pain, and to seek medical evaluation if any of these develop.
