Quick Overview

A construction site first aid kit is a field-ready collection of wound care, bleeding control, and trauma management supplies that enables on-site personnel to stabilize injured crew members until EMS arrives or transport to definitive care is arranged.

This kit is engineered to serve up to 25 personnel and meets Federal OSHA compliance standards under §1926.50(d) for construction sites and §1910.151b for general industry. The gasketed steel case provides weatherproof protection against dust, moisture, and impact, making it deployable across active job sites, work trucks, and field trailers. Its operational role is initial stabilization, not definitive treatment. The capability it provides exists to bridge the gap between injury and professional medical care.

The kit addresses the injury spectrum most common to construction environments: lacerations, abrasions, burns, sprains, and traumatic bleeding. Hemorrhage control capability includes eight 3x3 gauze pads, one 5x9 ABD combine pad, a gauze wrap roll, and first aid tape for building pressure dressings. Burn cream packs, an instant cold compress, and a triangular sling extend the kit's treatment reach into thermal injury and musculoskeletal trauma. A solar emergency blanket enables shock management protocol even in warm ambient conditions.

Readiness sustainment requires monthly inspection by a designated site safety officer or foreman, covering inventory counts, sterile packaging integrity, expiration dates, and case condition. The kit must be immediately taken out of service and fully restocked after any use. An inspection log recording the date, inspector initials, and items replaced is required for legal compliance and injury trend tracking.

Field Application Steps

1. SCENE SAFETY AND PPE: Confirm the power tool is off and the area is stable before approaching. Direct another worker to retrieve the kit and immediately don vinyl exam gloves before making patient contact.

2. PATIENT ASSESSMENT AND EXPOSURE: Approach the patient, identify yourself, and reassure them. Use the nickel-plated scissors to cut away clothing from the injury site and inspect the wound for foreign objects or debris.

3. DEBRIS REMOVAL: If visible splinters, gravel, or debris are present, use the plastic tweezers to remove them after gloving. Use antiseptic BZK wipes to clean the periphery of the wound only, not inside deep wounds.

4. HEMORRHAGE CONTROL: Place multiple 3x3 gauze pads directly on the wound and apply firm, direct, continuous pressure. If pads soak through, do not remove them. Add the 5x9 ABD combine pad on top and continue pressure.

5. CREATE PRESSURE DRESSING: Once bleeding slows, wrap the 3-inch rolled gauze tightly around the limb over all dressings to maintain pressure. Secure the wrap end with first aid tape.

6. TREAT FOR SHOCK: Lay the patient down with legs slightly elevated if possible. Unfold the solar emergency blanket and wrap it around the patient to conserve body heat, even in warm ambient temperatures, because trauma induces shock regardless of environment.

7. ACTIVATE EMS AND MONITOR: Confirm that 911 or the site emergency number has been called. Continuously monitor the patient's breathing and level of consciousness, check the dressing for bleed-through, and report all actions taken to arriving EMS personnel.

8. POST-INCIDENT REPLENISHMENT: Remove the kit from service immediately after use. Restock all consumed or opened items before returning it to its designated location. Log the date, items used, and inspector initials in the site safety binder or on the tag attached to the case.
