Quick Overview

The R&B Fabrications Intermediate I Trauma Bag is a professional-grade equipment chassis designed for BLS, ILS, and ALS providers who require a durable, field-ready platform for organizing and deploying medical supplies during trauma and medical emergencies.

The bag is delivered unstocked, placing full responsibility on the operator or agency to load it according to their certified scope of practice and local medical protocols. The main compartment accommodates larger items including BVMs, cervical collars, and splinting materials. The front external pocket lays flat for rapid access to assessment tools, while three large side and rear external pockets support segregated storage of hemorrhage control supplies, bulk dressings, and PPE. Optional hook-and-loop padded dividers allow internal configuration by treatment priority: Airway, Breathing, and Circulation.

The molded Tuff Bottom is the bag's primary environmental defense. It is engineered for direct deployment on abrasive surfaces such as asphalt and concrete, contaminated ground including automotive fluids and mud, and wet or icy surfaces, all without saturation of internal contents. The 1000 Denier Cordura nylon body resists tears and punctures during high-stress handling, and the reversed-coil YKK zippers allow reliable operation with gloved hands while shielding teeth from grit and debris.

Sustained readiness requires inspection after every call, daily per-shift checks of zippers and straps, and weekly full content removal with interior and exterior inspection. Post-exposure decontamination must follow OSHA standards using an approved disinfectant before the bag returns to service. Machine washing is prohibited.

Field Application Steps

1. DON TRANSPORT CONFIGURATION: Attach the adjustable shoulder strap and position the bag for hands-free carry to the point of injury. This preserves free hands for carrying an O2 cylinder, cardiac monitor, or other equipment during approach.

2. STAGE THE BAG AT SCENE: Place the bag directly on the ground surface, wet asphalt, mud, or debris included, relying on the Tuff Bottom to protect contents. Orient the bag with the front external pocket facing you before opening anything.

3. DON PPE: Access personal protective equipment from its designated external pocket before initiating patient contact. Do not skip this step regardless of scene urgency.

4. OPEN FRONT EXTERNAL POCKET FOR ASSESSMENT: Unzip the front pocket fully so it lays flat, exposing elastic loops and slot pockets. Retrieve assessment tools including trauma shears, penlight, and oral or nasal airways from their staged positions.

5. ACCESS HEMORRHAGE CONTROL SUPPLIES: For a patient with suspected or confirmed hemorrhage, open the pre-loaded side pocket to retrieve tourniquets and pressure dressings. Apply per your training and local protocol.

6. ACCESS MAIN COMPARTMENT FOR AIRWAY AND BREATHING INTERVENTIONS: If the patient presents with respiratory compromise, open the main compartment to retrieve the BVM and appropriate airway adjuncts. Keep all other compartments zipped during active intervention to protect contents from environmental exposure.

7. MAINTAIN COMPARTMENT DISCIPLINE IN ADVERSE CONDITIONS: Zip any compartment immediately after retrieving supplies, particularly in rain or contaminated environments. The Tuff Bottom protects ground-level moisture, but the Cordura top surfaces require this discipline during prolonged downpours.

8. CONDUCT RAPID INVENTORY PRIOR TO HANDOFF: Before moving the patient to the ambulance, identify all critical items used and confirm all tools and unused supplies are secured to their designated pockets. Close all zippers completely.

9. TRANSPORT BAG WITH PATIENT: Use the reinforced web carry handles to move the bag from scene to ambulance. Avoid placing the bag underneath heavy unsecured objects in the vehicle compartment, as the bag is durable but not crush-proof.

10. DECONTAMINATE POST-EXPOSURE: After any call involving bodily fluids, treat the bag as contaminated. Wipe all Tuff Bottom surfaces and the full Cordura body, interior, zippers, and seams with an approved disinfectant such as Cavi-Wipe, a bleach solution per local protocol, or an EPA-registered hospital-grade product. Allow full contact time, then air dry completely before restocking.

11. RESTOCK AND INSPECT BEFORE RETURNING TO SERVICE: Verify all used supplies are replaced with non-expired, undamaged items. Cross-reference against the laminated loadout checklist stored inside the bag. Confirm zipper function, handle and strap integrity, and Tuff Bottom condition before the bag is cleared for the next deployment.
