Quick Overview

The R&B Oversized Hydrant Tool Bag (Model 441) is a professional-grade hose-mounted equipment carrier designed for engine company personnel to maintain immediate, co-located access to essential hydrant connection tools during fireground water supply operations.

The Model 441 mounts directly to the terminal end of 2.5-inch to 5-inch Large Diameter Hose using dual 2-inch webbing straps with Velcro closures, positioning all required hydrant tools at the point of connection without requiring a separate tool carrier. The 14 oz. yellow vinyl body provides high-visibility identification in low-light conditions and is impervious to water, mud, and road grime. A heavy-duty Velcro top flap serves as the primary retention mechanism, preventing tool ejection during hose deployment, dragging, or charging.

Standard deployment loadout includes one hydrant wrench, two spanner wrenches, one hydrant gate valve, and any required thread adapters. The bag travels with the hose as it is pulled from the hose bed, delivering all tools directly to the hydrant without additional carries or trips back to the apparatus. Once the physical connection is complete, all tools must be returned and the flap re-secured before the line is charged, ensuring tool accountability and eliminating fireground trip hazards.

Readiness depends on consistent post-incident inspection of the vinyl body, stitched seams, and webbing straps, combined with routine Velcro closure maintenance using a stiff brush and water. Closures contaminated with mud, ice, or debris compromise holding strength and represent the primary mounting failure point. Bags that are severely worn or contaminated must be removed from service immediately.

Field Application Steps

1. IDENTIFY HOST HOSE: Select the first section of supply line designated for hydrant connection. Confirm it is the correct hose section before mounting any equipment.

2. MOUNT THE BAG: Position the bag approximately 12 to 24 inches behind the hydrant-end coupling. This clearance prevents the bag from interfering with coupling connection or gate valve attachment at the hydrant.

3. SECURE MOUNTING STRAPS: Wrap both 2-inch webbing straps tightly around the hose circumference. Pull each strap fully taut to eliminate all slack, then mate the Velcro surfaces completely. A loose bag is a snag and slip hazard during deployment.

4. LOAD TOOLS PER STANDARD LOADOUT: Place one hydrant wrench, two spanner wrenches, one hydrant gate valve, and any required thread adapters fully inside the bag. Do not exceed essential hydrant tools. Overloading fatigues the mounting straps and degrades hose handling dynamics.

5. SECURE THE TOP FLAP: Press the top flap firmly along its entire length to fully engage the Velcro closure. Confirm retention by performing a manual pull test on the flap before any hose movement.

6. DEPLOY THE SUPPLY LINE: Pull the designated supply line from the hose bed. Maintain situational awareness of the bag's position during the lay to avoid snagging on vehicle tires, curbs, or ground-level obstructions.

7. FLAKE AND POSITION AT THE HYDRANT: Flake out excess hose and position the hydrant-end coupling and bag for connection. Ensure the bag is accessible before opening the flap.

8. RETRIEVE TOOLS AND MAKE THE CONNECTION: Open the top flap and retrieve the necessary tools. Remove port caps, flush the hydrant, attach the gate valve or adapter, and connect the LDH to complete the physical connection.

9. RETURN TOOLS AND RE-SECURE THE FLAP: Immediately return all tools to the bag and press the top flap fully closed before signaling for water. This step is critical for tool accountability and elimination of trip hazards before the line stiffens under pressure.

10. SIGNAL FOR WATER: Notify the pump operator that the hydrant connection is complete. The bag remains secured on the hose as the line charges and pressurizes.
