Quick Overview

The R&B Fabrications Oxygen Cylinder Sleeve Cot Rail Mount is a heavy-duty fabric mounting system used by EMS, Fire-Rescue, and patient transport personnel to secure a standard "D" size oxygen cylinder directly to an ambulance cot rail during active patient movement.

The sleeve addresses a critical readiness gap in prehospital oxygen delivery: a loose cylinder during transport is a projectile hazard, a trip and snag risk, and a direct threat to continuous patient care. By unifying the cylinder with the transport platform through dual 2-inch webbing straps with industrial-grade hook-and-loop closure, the system prevents rotation, sliding, and separation across all phases of movement, from point of patient contact through complex egress routes and into the transport vehicle. A dedicated tubing management tab controls excess oxygen line, eliminating entanglement risk during stair carries and transfers.

Deployment protocol follows three sequential phases: preparation and staging, mounting and securing, and final connections. The operator confirms cylinder size and pressure, inserts the cylinder valve-end up, and attaches the regulator before mounting, a sequence designed to reduce handling risk and improve field efficiency. After straps are routed fully around the cot rail and tightened, a physical security check requiring push, pull, and rotation verification is mandatory before any patient lift.

Sustainment protocols are equally precise. Pre-shift inspection covers hook-and-loop surface condition, webbing integrity, and sleeve body for rips or contamination. Post-operational decontamination requires intermediate-level disinfectants compatible with nylon fabrics, complete drying before return to service, and prohibition on bleach or caustic agents that degrade structural integrity over time.

Field Application Steps

1. SELECT AND VERIFY THE CYLINDER: Confirm the cylinder is a standard "D" size with an approximate 4.5-inch diameter. Verify the cylinder has adequate pressure for the anticipated transport time before proceeding.

2. INSERT THE CYLINDER INTO THE SLEEVE: Firmly slide the cylinder into the padded sleeve until it is fully seated at the bottom. The regulator valve assembly must be fully exposed at the top opening of the sleeve.

3. ATTACH THE REGULATOR BEFORE MOUNTING: Connect the oxygen regulator to the cylinder valve while the assembly is still in hand, not after it is fixed to the cot rail. This is the safest and most efficient sequence for field deployment.

4. POSITION THE SLEEVED CYLINDER ON THE COT RAIL: Place the assembly against the cot side rail, typically along the patient's torso. Confirm the position does not interfere with cot raising and lowering, side rail operation, or limb access for IVs or blood pressure checks.

5. ROUTE AND FASTEN THE WEBBING STRAPS: Route both the top and bottom webbing straps under and fully around the cot rail. Pull each strap taut and press the hook-and-loop surfaces together as tightly as possible to lock the assembly in place.

6. PERFORM THE SECURITY CHECK: Vigorously push, pull, and attempt to rotate the mounted cylinder. It must not shift, slide, or rotate in any direction. If any movement is detected, re-tighten both straps before proceeding.

7. CONNECT OXYGEN DELIVERY DEVICE TO PATIENT: Connect the non-rebreather mask or nasal cannula to the regulator and apply it to the patient. Set the prescribed flow rate per protocol.

8. MANAGE EXCESS OXYGEN TUBING: Neatly coil any excess oxygen tubing and secure the coil to the sleeve using the dedicated hook-and-loop tubing management tab near the top opening. This step is critical to prevent line entanglement during stair carries and transfers.

9. STOW ANCILLARY SUPPLIES (MODEL 475 ONLY): Place a backup non-rebreather mask and a cylinder wrench into the exterior storage pocket for immediate access during transport.

10. CONDUCT PRE-MOVEMENT FINAL CHECK: Before any patient lift or movement, physically re-verify strap tightness, confirm oxygen is flowing at the correct rate, and confirm the tubing is secured and routed clear of all personnel movement paths.
