Quick Overview

The SGS-3 Gripper Strap is a reusable, high-visibility nylon bundling device used by fire and EMS personnel to secure, organize, and rapidly deploy equipment on apparatus and at incident scenes.

The SGS-3 is built around four functional components: heavy-duty red nylon webbing that encircles and compresses the bundle, a welded metal loop that provides mechanical advantage during cinching, a hook-and-loop fastener engineered for glove-friendly closure, and 1.5-inch 3M reflective tape for rapid identification in low-light and smoke-filled environments. Authorized applications include securing highrise packs, donut rolls, and leader lines on the fire ground, bundling hydraulic lines and rescue ropes for apparatus stowage, and consolidating ancillary equipment during EMS and rescue operations. The strap is rated for bundles with a circumference between 12 and 26 inches.

Deployment follows a seven-step protocol: the bundle is prepared and confirmed within the operational range, the strap is positioned reflective side up, wrapped approximately one-third from an end for stability, threaded through the welded metal loop, cinched with firm hand pressure, and locked by pressing the full hook-and-loop surface flat. Readiness verification requires the operator to attempt to shift the bundle and confirm no tail is protruding as a snag hazard.

The SGS-3 is not rated for life-safety applications and must never be used for hoisting, fall protection, or patient restraint. Inspection is required pre-use, post-use, and monthly, covering the webbing, metal loop, fastener grip integrity, and reflective tape condition. A strap that fails any inspection criterion must be removed from service immediately.

Field Application Steps

1. PREPARE THE BUNDLE: Fold or roll the hose or equipment into its desired configuration. Confirm the bundle circumference is within the operational range of 12 to 26 inches before proceeding.

2. POSITION THE STRAP: Lay the SGS-3 flat with the reflective side facing up. Place the bundle centrally on the strap so the webbing can encircle it cleanly.

3. WRAP AND LOCATE: Wrap the strap fully around the bundle. Position the strap approximately one-third from one end of the bundle to maximize stability during carry and deployment.

4. THREAD THE METAL LOOP: Feed the free, hook-faced end of the strap through the welded metal loop. This creates the mechanical advantage needed to achieve a firm cinch on bulky loads.

5. CINCH THE BUNDLE: Pull the free end away from the metal loop with firm, steady hand pressure. For heavy bundles, use body weight to achieve a tight, stable cinch. Do not use mechanical tools.

6. ENGAGE THE FASTENER: Lay the free end flat against the strap body so the full hook-and-loop surface contacts and engages. Press firmly along the entire length of the fastener to achieve a positive lock.

7. VERIFY SECURITY: Attempt to shift the equipment within the strap. Movement should be minimal to none. Confirm no tail is protruding from the bundle that could create a snag or trip hazard on the fire ground or in an apparatus compartment.

8. RELEASE THE BUNDLE: To disengage, locate the end of the strap and pull it firmly away from the bundle in a peeling motion to separate the hook-and-loop fastener.

9. REMOVE THE STRAP: Once the fastener is fully disengaged, pull the strap free from the metal loop and remove it from the equipment. Inspect before restowing.
