Quick Overview

The R&B Single Gripper Hose Strap (SGS-1) is a professional-grade nylon webbing tool used by fire service personnel to bundle, compress, and secure hose loads and equipment for rapid deployment on the fire ground and during transport.

The SGS-1 system consists of two primary components: 2-inch black nylon webbing rated to a tensile breaking strength of 3,000 lbs, and a stainless steel cinch buckle with toothed grippers designed for positive engagement under tension. The buckle's spring-loaded release tab allows operators to cinch or release the strap while wearing structural firefighting gloves, maintaining readiness under full PPE. The webbing is treated to resist moisture, mold, and mildew, though it remains susceptible to high heat and chemical degradation.

Authorized applications include assembling custom hose packs such as Cleveland, Denver, and Horseshoe loads for apparatus hose beds or stairwell carries, lashing tools and salvage covers to apparatus or carrying frames, and bundling bulk supply lines for logistics and inventory management. A minimum of two straps is required for any hose bundle, with three to four straps recommended for longer or heavier loads. The working load limit is approximately 600 lbs, calculated at one-fifth of the rated breaking strength.

The SGS-1 is classified as non-life safety equipment and must never be used for rappelling, hoisting personnel, fall protection, patient packaging, or vehicle recovery. Inspection protocol requires a rapid tactile and visual check before each use, a detailed inspection after each operational deployment, and a full inventory inspection monthly. Straps showing heat damage, chemical contamination, cuts, fraying, or buckle deformation must be removed from service immediately.

Field Application Steps

1. CONFIGURE THE HOSE LOAD: Lay out the required hose length in the desired configuration, such as a Cleveland Load, Denver Load, or flat load. Confirm that the nozzle and couplings are positioned correctly per departmental policy before applying any straps.

2. STAGE ALL FOUR STRAPS: Conduct a rapid tactile and visual inspection of each SGS-1 strap before deployment. Verify the buckle spring mechanism and gripper teeth are functional and free of debris, and confirm the webbing shows no cuts, fraying, heat damage, or chemical contamination.

3. POSITION THE FIRST STRAP: Place the first strap 12 to 18 inches from one end of the hose bundle. Space all additional straps at regular intervals along the bundle to ensure uniform compression across the load.

4. ENCIRCLE THE BUNDLE: Wrap the webbing over the top of the hose bundle and bring the free end down toward the buckle. Keep the webbing flat against the bundle surface to distribute pressure evenly and prevent hose damage.

5. FEED THE WEBBING THROUGH THE BUCKLE: Feed the free end of the webbing up through the back of the buckle, then down through the front slot over the toothed gripper bar. Confirm the webbing is seated correctly over the gripper teeth before applying tension.

6. CINCH AND TENSION THE STRAP: Grasp the tail of the webbing and pull firmly away from the buckle. Use body weight to compress the pack fully. Audible clicks confirm the gripper teeth are engaging and the strap is holding tension.

7. SECURE THE TAIL: Tuck the excess webbing tail under the main strap body to eliminate snag hazards during carry or deployment. Repeat placement, encirclement, feeding, tensioning, and tail securement for all remaining straps.

8. RELEASE THE STRAP WHEN REDEPLOYING: Grasp the buckle firmly with one hand. Using the thumb or fingers of the other hand, depress and lift the spring-loaded release tab on the top of the buckle while pulling the main strap body to release tension and slide the webbing free.

9. STOW FOR NEXT DEPLOYMENT: Once removed, coil each strap and secure it in a clean, dry compartment away from direct sunlight, chemicals, and sharp objects. Store in a coiled or loosely folded configuration to prevent permanent creasing of the webbing.
