Quick Overview

The R&B Fabrications M/S-101 Small Forestry Hose Pack is a specialized low-capacity hose carrier designed for wildland fire crews who need rapid, mobile deployment of 3/4" forestry hose during mop-up, spot fire suppression, cold trailing, and hose lay extension in difficult terrain.

The M/S-101 carries 100 feet of pre-connected 3/4" forestry hose across two 50-foot rolls in a single vertically-oriented compartment measuring 14"L x 14"H x 4"W. The 22 oz. reinforced vinyl body provides puncture and water resistance, while the high-visibility yellow color supports personnel accountability in low-light conditions, heavy smoke, and dense vegetation. The integrated carry handle enables one-hand transport, freeing the operator's second hand for a hand tool during movement through the black. This pack is purpose-built for Type 6 engines, UTVs, and prescribed burn oversight personnel.

Proper loading protocol is critical to field-ready deployment. Each hose section is rolled into a single donut configuration with the female coupling inside and the male coupling outside, which prevents kinks on deployment. The two rolls are pre-connected inside the pack so the operator can grasp the lead male coupling and walk the line out as a single 100-foot lay without interruption. The line is charged only after full deployment and confirmation that the hose is clear of kinks.

Operational readiness for this pack requires consistent pre-shift inspection and post-operation sustainment. Operators must inspect seams, stitching, the vinyl body, and carry handle anchor points before each deployment. After use, the pack must be emptied, washed with mild soap and water, air dried completely, and stored dry. The vinyl shell is water-resistant but not fireproof, and the pack must never be placed on hot embers, smoldering ground, or in direct contact with flame.

Field Application Steps

1. ACQUIRE AND INSPECT HOSE: Obtain two clean, dry 50-foot sections of 3/4" forestry hose with serviceable couplings. Inspect all couplings and gaskets to confirm secure, leak-free connections before loading.

2. ROLL EACH HOSE SECTION: Roll each 50-foot section into a single donut roll with the female coupling positioned inside the roll and the male coupling positioned on the outside. This orientation is critical to preventing kinks during deployment.

3. LOAD THE FIRST ROLL: Place the first hose roll into the main compartment with the male coupling oriented upward. Do not force the hose against the sides of the compartment.

4. LOAD THE SECOND ROLL AND PRE-CONNECT: Place the second roll on top of the first, male coupling oriented upward. Connect the male coupling of the bottom hose to the female coupling of the top hose to create a pre-connected 100-foot line. Confirm the lead male coupling of the top hose is accessible at the top of the compartment.

5. SECURE THE LOAD: Close and secure the top flap. Confirm the pack is balanced and that hose is not bulging against the sides of the compartment.

6. STAGE FOR TRANSPORT: Store the loaded M/S-101 in a designated, accessible compartment on the apparatus. The slim profile is designed for efficient storage on Type 6 engines and UTVs.

7. CARRY TO THE DROP POINT: Retrieve the pack using the integrated carry handle at the drop point. Maintain a firm grip and use the one-hand carry to keep your second hand free for a hand tool during movement over uneven terrain.

8. POSITION AND OPEN THE PACK: Place the pack on the ground at the starting point for the hose lay. Open the top flap to expose the hose load.

9. DEPLOY THE HOSE LINE: Grasp the lead male coupling and walk in the intended direction. The hose rolls will pay out as a continuous 100-foot line. Do not charge the line until it is fully extended and clear of kinks.

10. CHARGE THE LINE: Connect the female coupling at the pack end to the pump or water source. Charge the line only on direction from the nozzle operator.

11. POST-OPERATION SUSTAINMENT: Immediately after use, remove all hose from the pack. Wash the pack interior and exterior with mild soap and water to remove soot, dirt, and ash. Hang to air dry completely before storage.

12. STORE FOR NEXT DEPLOYMENT: Store the clean, dry, empty pack in its designated location on the apparatus or in quarters, ready for reloading prior to the next operational period.
