Quick Overview

A kerosene lantern is a non-electric, fuel-burning illumination device used by emergency operators, field personnel, and off-grid households to maintain reliable area lighting during power outages, natural disasters, and austere environment deployments.

The Rothco 12" Kerosene Hurricane Lantern operates on K1 kerosene or clear lamp oil stored in an 8 oz fuel reservoir, delivering stable, long-duration light through a flat cotton wick and glass globe chimney system. The wick draws fuel via capillary action, and flame height is regulated by a wick control knob to achieve an optimal burn of approximately one inch, balancing light output, fuel consumption, and combustion cleanliness. Proper pre-ignition wick saturation of at least 20 minutes is required to protect the wick and ensure reliable ignition.

Safe deployment requires deliberate placement on a level, non-combustible surface with a minimum 36-inch clearance from all combustible materials, including ceilings, curtains, and bedding. The unit must be operated only in ventilated spaces, as it consumes oxygen and produces carbon monoxide, an odorless and colorless toxic gas. The vented hood and glass globe reach extreme temperatures during operation and must never be contacted directly while the lantern is hot.

Sustained readiness requires pre-deployment inspection of the globe, reservoir, and wick condition, along with on-hand fuel supply and at least one spare wick. For storage exceeding 30 days, the reservoir must be emptied to prevent fuel degradation and wick gumming. Treating the lantern as critical field equipment, inspecting and function-testing it before high-risk seasons, ensures it performs when grid power is unavailable.

Field Application Steps

1. SELECT FUELING LOCATION: Move the lantern to a well-ventilated staging area such as outdoors or an open garage before fueling. Keep all ignition sources clear of the area during this phase.

2. INSPECT THE UNIT: Conduct a visual and tactile inspection of the glass globe for cracks, the fuel reservoir for leaks, and verify the wick control knob and globe lift lever operate correctly. Do not proceed if any component is damaged or malfunctioning.

3. FUEL THE RESERVOIR: Unscrew the fuel cap and use a funnel to fill the reservoir with approved K1 kerosene or clear lamp oil to approximately 80% capacity, roughly 6.5 oz. Do not overfill.

4. SECURE AND CLEAN: Thread the fuel cap on securely finger-tight. Wipe the entire exterior with a dry cloth to remove any spilled fuel before proceeding.

5. SATURATE THE WICK: If the wick is new or dry, allow a minimum of 20 minutes for full fuel saturation before attempting ignition. Lighting a dry wick will permanently damage it.

6. SET WICK HEIGHT: Use the wick control knob to raise the wick until it extends approximately 1/4 inch above the top of the burner assembly.

7. ACCESS THE WICK: Engage the globe lift lever to raise the glass globe, exposing the burner and wick for ignition.

8. IGNITE THE WICK: Use a long-stemmed lighter or match to ignite the top edge of the wick. Immediately lower the globe by disengaging the lever and confirm it seats correctly in the burner base.

9. STABILIZE AND ADJUST FLAME: Allow the flame to burn for 1 to 2 minutes to warm the chimney and establish proper draft. Use the wick control knob to reduce the flame to a steady, rounded profile approximately one inch high with no visible smoke.

10. DEPLOY THE LANTERN: Grasp the bail handle firmly and transport to the deployment location. Avoid all contact with the vented hood and glass globe during movement, as both are extremely hot.

11. ESTABLISH PLACEMENT: Set the lantern on a stable, level, non-combustible surface with a minimum of 36 inches of clearance in all directions from combustible materials. If hanging, confirm the anchor point can support the lantern's weight indefinitely.

12. EXTINGUISH AND SECURE: Turn the wick control knob counter-clockwise to fully retract the wick and starve the flame. Allow the unit to cool on a stable surface for a minimum of 30 to 45 minutes before refueling, moving to storage, or performing any maintenance.
