Quick Overview

The Rothco 4-Piece Canteen Kit is a compact field hydration and water purification system used by individual operators on short-duration patrols, recreational hikes, and survival operations to carry potable water and boil-purify biologically suspect water sources using solid fuel.

The kit integrates four components into a single deployable system: a 1-quart BPA-free plastic canteen for cold liquid transport, a 24oz heavy-gauge aluminum cup for boiling and heating, an aluminum stove stand engineered for solid fuel tablets, and a polyester cover with felt lining for protection, insulation, and ALICE clip attachment to load-bearing equipment. Each component serves a distinct function, and non-standard substitutions compromise the system's integrity. The external tab pouch provides ancillary storage for purification tablets or a ferrocerium rod, keeping critical consumables consolidated at the point of need.

Field purification capability is achieved by boiling water in the aluminum cup at a sustained rolling boil for a minimum of one full minute, with an additional minute required per 1,000 feet of elevation above 6,500 feet. Boiling addresses biological threats including bacteria, protozoa, and viruses, but does not remove chemical contaminants, heavy metals, or particulate matter. Turbid water requires pre-filtration through cloth or a dedicated filter before boiling is effective.

Operator readiness depends on pre-mission inspection of all four components and post-mission sustainment including washing, thorough air drying of the felt lining, and correct stowage sequence. The plastic canteen is rated for cold liquid transport only and must never be exposed to a heat source.

Field Application Steps

1. SITE SELECTION AND PREPARATION: Select a stable, level, non-flammable surface such as bare rock or mineral soil, and clear a minimum of 3 feet of surrounding ground of all flammable debris. Verify overhead clearance and position yourself upwind of the stove to avoid inhaling fuel fumes.

2. SYSTEM DEPLOYMENT: Remove the canteen assembly from the polyester cover and separate all four components: the plastic canteen, the aluminum cup, the stove stand, and the cover. Place the stove stand on the prepared surface.

3. WATER COLLECTION: Fill the aluminum cup from the water source, not the plastic canteen. Do not exceed 3/4 capacity, approximately 18 to 20 ounces, to prevent boiling over.

4. PRE-HEAT HANDLE CHECK: Extend the butterfly handle to its fully open and locked position before placing the cup on any heat source. Never attempt to move a heated cup with an unlocked or partially extended handle.

5. FUEL PLACEMENT AND IGNITION: Place one solid fuel tablet such as Esbit or Hexamine in the center of the stove stand base. Place the water-filled aluminum cup onto the stand, then ignite the fuel tablet using a lighter, ferrocerium rod, or match.

6. PURIFICATION BOIL: Monitor the cup until a sustained rolling boil is achieved, defined as large bubbles continuously breaking the surface. Maintain that rolling boil for a minimum of 1 full minute, adding 1 additional minute for every 1,000 feet of elevation above 6,500 feet.

7. COOLING AND DECANTING: Allow the fuel tablet to burn out completely or extinguish it safely. Using the butterfly handle only, remove the hot cup and place it on a safe, level surface. Do not touch the cup body or stand until fully cooled, then pour purified water into the plastic canteen.

8. SYSTEM STOWAGE: Confirm the fuel source is completely extinguished and cold, then police the area for embers or residue. Once all metal components are cool to the touch, clean any soot or residue, nest the canteen inside the cup, place the stove stand on top of the canteen cap, and slide the full assembly into the polyester cover, securing the dual snap-button closure.
