Quick Overview

A range bag is a purpose-built soft transport system used by firearms operators to organize, protect, and carry sidearms, magazines, ammunition, and range safety equipment during live-fire training sessions and qualification events.

The Rothco Canvas Tactical Shooting Range Bag is built around three design priorities: immediate access to firearms and magazines, physical segregation of bulk gear from primary weapons systems, and capacity sufficient for one to two sidearms across a single range day. The bag features a full-length padded gun pocket isolated from the main compartment, twelve elastic magazine loops distributed across exterior side compartments, and a removable hard bottom polymer insert that prevents structural sagging under load. Construction is 18oz heavyweight canvas rated for concrete, wood bench, and dirt surface deployment.

Operator protocol requires the firearm to be confirmed unloaded and chamber-empty before stowage in the padded gun pocket, with all magazines oriented consistently in the elastic loops for reliable indexing during reloads. At the firing line, the firearm is retrieved only after clearance from range safety personnel. Post-mission stowage mandates a full chamber and magazine well inspection before returning the firearm to the bag, followed by a complete equipment inventory before transport.

This bag is designated a soft transport case only. It does not meet the legal definition of a locked firearm container in many jurisdictions, provides concealment rather than security, and is not rated for long-term storage, unattended vehicle storage, or use as a primary security container.

Field Application Steps

1. INSPECT THE BAG BEFORE LOADING: Begin with a completely empty bag. Visually and physically check all compartments for foreign debris. Confirm the removable hard bottom polymer insert is seated flat along the floor of the main compartment before any equipment is placed inside.

2. VERIFY AND STOW THE FIREARM: Confirm the firearm is unloaded, the chamber is empty, and the safety is engaged before touching the bag. Place the cleared firearm into the padded gun pocket with the grip facing up, then close and secure the zipper completely.

3. LOAD MAGAZINES INTO ELASTIC LOOPS: Seat magazines into the twelve elastic retention loops in the designated side compartment. Orient all magazine baseplates in the same direction to ensure consistent indexing during rapid reloads under training conditions.

4. LOAD BULK GEAR INTO THE MAIN COMPARTMENT: Place boxed ammunition, hearing protection, safety glasses, cleaning kits, and any additional required gear into the main compartment after firearms and magazines are secured. Distribute weight evenly across the compartment floor.

5. CONDUCT THE FINAL SECURITY CHECK: Close and secure all zippers. Lift the bag by the dual top carry handles only, not by zipper pulls, to confirm the load is balanced and all compartments are properly sealed before transport.

6. STAGE THE BAG AT THE RANGE: Place the bag on a stable, flat surface at the designated shooting station or staging area. Orient the bag so the magazine compartment and main compartment are accessible with minimal movement during drills.

7. RETRIEVE THE FIREARM AT THE FIRING LINE: Remove the firearm from the padded gun pocket only when positioned at the designated firing line and explicitly cleared by range safety personnel. Maintain positive muzzle control throughout the uncasing process.

8. CLEAR THE FIREARM BEFORE POST-MISSION STOWAGE: After the training session, unload the firearm completely. Visually and physically inspect both the chamber and the magazine well to confirm the weapon is empty before returning it to the bag.

9. STOW THE CLEARED FIREARM: Return the confirmed-clear firearm to the padded gun pocket and secure the zipper. Do not place a loaded firearm into the bag at any point unless explicitly authorized by applicable law and local range regulations.

10. COLLECT AND STOW ALL MAGAZINES: Gather all spent and unused magazines. Return them to the elastic retention loops or stow them in the main compartment. Account for all magazines before closing the bag.

11. CONDUCT FULL EQUIPMENT INVENTORY: Perform a complete inventory of all equipment before zipping compartments closed for transport. Shake out brass shavings, dirt, and powder residue from all compartments to prevent contamination and abrasion of stored equipment.
