Quick Overview

The Rothco G.I. Type 1-Quart Canteen and Pistol Belt Kit is a body-worn hydration system designed to transport 32 ounces of potable water for individual operators conducting outdoor, training, or emergency preparedness field activities.

The kit consists of five components working together as a complete hydration carry system: a BPA-free, kidney-shaped 1-quart canteen body, a watertight screw-on cap with integrated retainer strap, a polyester canteen cover with felt lining and dual ALICE clips for belt attachment, and a 2 1/8-inch wide adjustable web pistol belt with a metal friction buckle rated to a maximum of 39 inches. The felt-lined cover serves a dual purpose, securing the canteen to the belt platform and providing passive insulation against rapid temperature change. In hot, arid environments, saturating the cover with water activates evaporative cooling, extending the usability of contents in the field.

Deployment protocol requires inspection before each use, confirming the canteen body is free of cracks, the cap seal is intact, the cover snaps lock positively, and the belt shows no fraying or buckle damage. Personnel should fill only from confirmed potable sources, as this system has no purification capability. A 1-inch air gap must be maintained at the top of the canteen to allow for thermal expansion, and in sub-freezing conditions, fill capacity must not exceed three-quarters to prevent cracking from ice expansion.

Sustainment readiness depends on disciplined cleaning and storage protocol. After each use, the canteen interior and cap are washed with warm water and mild dish soap, periodically sanitized with one teaspoon of unscented household bleach held for 5 to 10 minutes, and rinsed thoroughly multiple times before reuse. For storage, the canteen must be completely air-dried inverted with the cap off, then stored in a cool, dark, dry location with the cap loosely threaded or removed to prevent pressure buildup and mold growth.

Field Application Steps

1. INSPECT ALL COMPONENTS: Visually examine the canteen body for cracks or stress marks, test the cap seal for integrity, actuate both snap fasteners on the cover to confirm positive lock, and check the pistol belt and friction buckle for fraying or damage. Do not deploy any component that fails inspection.

2. CLEAN BEFORE FIRST USE OR AFTER STORAGE: Wash the canteen interior and cap with warm water and mild dish soap, using a bottle brush to reach all interior surfaces. Rinse completely until no soap residue remains before filling.

3. ASSEMBLE THE CARRY SYSTEM: Insert the canteen into the polyester cover and close both metal snap fasteners to secure it fully. Confirm the canteen is completely seated before mounting to the belt.

4. MOUNT THE COVER TO THE PISTOL BELT: Thread the pistol belt through the two slide-lock keepers on the rear of the canteen cover, positioning the assembly at the desired hip carry location.

5. DON AND FIT THE BELT: Put on the pistol belt and adjust it using the metal friction buckle until it sits snug and comfortable at the waist. The canteen should rest securely against the hip with minimal lateral movement.

6. FILL FROM A POTABLE SOURCE ONLY: Fill the canteen with water confirmed safe for consumption or properly purified prior to filling. Leave approximately 1 inch of air gap at the top to prevent spillage and allow for thermal expansion.

7. SEAL AND VERIFY: Screw the cap on tightly, then briefly invert the canteen to confirm the seal holds without leakage before stowing.

8. APPLY EVAPORATIVE COOLING IF CONDITIONS REQUIRE: In hot, arid environments, saturate the outer polyester and felt cover with water. Evaporation from the cover surface draws heat away from the canteen, extending the cooling period of the contents.

9. ACCESS WATER IN THE FIELD: Release both snap fasteners on the cover and withdraw the canteen. Unscrew the cap, which remains attached via the retainer strap. Drink as required and do not set the cap down in the field.

10. STOW AFTER DRINKING: Replace and tighten the cap securely. Reinsert the canteen fully into the cover and fasten both snaps before resuming movement.

11. CLEAN AFTER EVERY USE: Empty the canteen completely, wash the interior and cap with warm water and mild dish soap using a bottle brush, and rinse until no soap residue remains.

12. DRY AND STORE CORRECTLY: Air-dry the canteen completely by placing it inverted with the cap off in a well-ventilated area. Store in a cool, dark, dry location with the cap loosely threaded or removed to allow air circulation and prevent pressure buildup and mold growth.
