Quick Overview

A folding field cot is a portable, elevated sleep platform used by military operators, disaster responders, and field personnel to separate the user from ground moisture, heat loss, and pests during sustained or semi-permanent field deployments.

The Rothco G.I. Type Aluminum Folding Cot is built around a structural system of two longitudinal aluminum main frame rails, three steel X-frame leg sets, and two tensioning end bars that lock the entire assembly under high tension. The 600D polyester deck is permanently sleeved onto the rails and serves as the sleep surface, selected for abrasion resistance and moisture durability. At approximately 17 inches of ground clearance, the platform creates usable under-cot storage space, a meaningful tactical advantage in confined shelters where operational footprint must be maximized.

Deployment readiness begins before the cot is ever unfolded. Pre-deployment inspection protocol requires visual checks of the fabric deck for rips, frayed stitching, or UV degradation, frame components for cracks at rivet points or stress fractures, and both end bars for straightness and intact notches. Loss of a single end bar renders the entire system non-mission-capable, making accountability of these components a critical stowage discipline after every breakdown.

The cot is rated for a 300 lb static load with evenly distributed weight. Dynamic loads such as jumping or dropping heavy gear, and point loads such as standing on the center, can cause catastrophic frame or leg failure. Authorized deployment environments include base camps, Forward Operating Bases, disaster response shelters, and expeditionary vehicle-based operations. This system is not suitable for lightweight man-portable missions.

Field Application Steps

1. SITE SELECTION AND PREPARATION: Identify the most level ground available within the shelter and clear the designated footprint of approximately 75 inches by 27 inches. Remove sharp rocks, roots, or debris that could puncture the cot fabric or damage the shelter floor.

2. COMPONENT LAYOUT: Remove the folded cot frame and both loose tensioning end bars from the carry bag. Unfold the main cot frame and lay it flat on the prepared surface with the fabric deck facing up.

3. FRAME EXPANSION: Fully extend the cot frame lengthwise. Rotate and open each of the three X-frame leg sets until they are fully extended and perpendicular to the main frame rails. The cot will stand on its legs at this stage, but the frame will remain loose and the fabric slack. Keep fingers clear of all pivot points throughout this step.

4. END BAR INSTALLATION, FIRST END: Insert one notched end of the tensioning bar into the corresponding circular hole on the inside of an aluminum frame rail. Grasp the opposite rail and the center of the end bar, apply outward pressure on the frame rail while pushing the end bar into a bow shape, and guide the second notched end into its hole using body weight and leverage. Confirm both notched ends are seated securely. Never position your face directly over the end bar during this procedure.

5. END BAR INSTALLATION, SECOND END: Repeat the tensioning sequence at the opposite end of the cot. The frame is now under full operational tension and the deck should be taut.

6. FINAL SYSTEM CHECK: Push down firmly on the center of the deck to confirm stability. Verify all six leg contact points are in solid contact with the ground. If any leg is unsupported, reposition the cot to level ground before use.

7. BREAKDOWN PROCEDURE: Firmly pull one frame rail outward while pushing an end bar inward to unseat it. Once the first bar is removed, the second releases with minimal effort. Fold the X-frame legs inward, fold the main frame, and stow all components in the carry bag. Confirm both tensioning end bars are secured inside the bag before closing.
