The guard system integrates three purpose-built components working in sequence. The non-reflective polycarbonate outer shell deflects and distributes kinetic energy from baton strikes and thrown projectiles. Behind it, EVA foam padding absorbs and dissipates the transferred impact energy, mitigating bruising, soft tissue damage, and potential fractures. The polyester tricot mesh liner promotes airflow and moisture management during extended deployment periods.

Proper fit is a non-negotiable readiness requirement for this equipment. A guard that is too loose will rotate upon impact, exposing the area it was designed to protect and creating a snag hazard during dynamic movement. A guard that is too tight restricts circulation and reduces dexterity, degrading operational effectiveness. The key standard from the field manual is direct: if the guard can be rotated around the forearm with reasonable force, it is not properly secured and must be adjusted before entering the operational area.

This equipment carries clearly defined capability limits that every operator must internalize prior to deployment. The forearm guards provide zero ballistic protection, zero edged or spiked weapon protection, and zero fire or flame resistance. The polycarbonate, foam, and strap materials are not fire-retardant. A severe impact may fracture the shell, creating secondary projectile fragments. Understanding these limits is as critical as understanding the protection the equipment does provide.

Field Application Steps

1. REMOVE AND STAGE EQUIPMENT: Remove both forearm guards from the nylon mesh carry bag and lay them on a flat surface side by side before beginning inspection.

2. INSPECT SHELL INTEGRITY: Visually examine each polycarbonate outer shell for cracks, deep gouges, or deformities. Do not deploy any guard with a compromised shell.

3. CHECK STRAP SERVICEABILITY: Test all three elastic straps on each guard for remaining elasticity. Verify that all hook-and-loop fastener surfaces are clean and provide strong purchase. Frayed straps or contaminated fasteners are a failure point and must be flagged before deployment.

4. INSPECT EVA FOAM PADDING: Examine the inner foam layer on each guard for significant compression set or tears that would reduce trauma attenuation effectiveness. A permanently compressed foam layer cannot adequately dissipate impact energy.

5. ORIENT LEFT AND RIGHT GUARDS: Identify the designated left and right guards. Seat the contoured elbow cup directly over the olecranon process, the bony point of the elbow, before applying any straps.

6. SECURE STRAPS DISTAL TO PROXIMAL: Apply straps from the bottom of the arm upward. Fasten the wrist strap first, snug but not circulation-restricting. Then secure the medial strap around the thickest part of the forearm. Finally, fasten the proximal elbow strap above the joint to lock the elbow cup in place.

7. PERFORM FINAL ADJUSTMENT: Systematically re-tighten all three straps starting from the wrist strap upward. Confirm no significant gaps exist between the padding and the arm, and that the guard cannot be rotated around the forearm with reasonable force.

8. REPEAT FOR OPPOSITE ARM: Complete steps 5 through 7 on the second arm before proceeding to the mobility check. Both guards must be donned and adjusted before the check begins.

9. CONDUCT FULL RANGE OF MOTION CHECK: Extend and flex both arms fully. Make a fist and then open both hands completely. Guards must not impede essential movement at any point in the range of motion.

10. EXECUTE DEFENSIVE SIMULATION: Simulate defensive blocking motions at operational speed. Guards must remain securely in place and not shift or rotate upon impact simulation. Re-adjust any guard that moves before entering the operational area.

11. POST-OPERATION DECONTAMINATION: Remove large debris from shell and straps first. Wipe all surfaces with a damp cloth using water and mild soap. Rinse with a clean damp cloth, then air dry completely. Do not use heat sources such as hair dryers or heaters, as direct heat will warp the shell and damage the foam.

12. INSPECT AND STORE: Conduct a full inspection per the pre-deployment protocol after every operation and on a weekly cycle. Remove any guard with cracked shell material or straps that are torn or have lost elasticity from service immediately. No field repair is authorized. Store the pair inside the provided nylon mesh bag in a climate-controlled environment away from direct sunlight, extreme temperatures, and heavy equipment that could deform the shells.
