Quick Overview

The Rothco MOLLE Open Top Double Mag Pouch is a bungee-retention magazine carrier designed for tactical operators, law enforcement, and competitive shooters who require immediate, one-handed access to two standard capacity rifle magazines during high-tempo operations.

The pouch prioritizes reload speed and reduced acoustic signature over the environmental protection offered by flap-covered alternatives. Its 600D polyester dual-cell chassis provides structural rigidity for smooth draws and re-indexing, while two adjustable elastic bungee cords apply downward retention pressure that can be tuned to pass an inverted shake test while still releasing with a single finger sweep. Textured pull tabs are purpose-built for gloved, one-handed operation under stress.

Mounting is accomplished via four rear MOLLE straps woven through PALS webbing in an alternating pattern. All four straps must be engaged to create a stable, non-shifting platform, as any vertical or horizontal play can cause a failed draw during deployment. The front face features six MOLLE loops that allow operators to stack additional mission-essential equipment within the same vertical footprint.

This pouch is doctrinally suited for close-quarters battle, high-tempo operations, and any scenario where the time penalty of manipulating a flap is operationally unacceptable. The open-top design carries trade-offs: feed lips are directly exposed to sand, dirt, mud, and water, and the bungee system offers less retention security than enclosed pouches in airborne, maritime, or dense vegetation environments. Readiness requires regular inspection of bungee elasticity, stitching integrity, and pouch cell cleanliness before every deployment.

Field Application Steps

1. SELECT MOUNTING POSITION: Choose an ergonomic location on your MOLLE platform that allows a natural, unobstructed draw stroke with the support hand. Confirm the selected PALS webbing rows are undamaged and free of debris before attaching the pouch.

2. MOUNT THE POUCH TO PALS WEBBING: Weave all four rear MOLLE straps through the PALS webbing in a strict alternating pattern. Close all terminal snaps firmly and verify zero vertical or horizontal play in any direction before proceeding.

3. INSERT MAGAZINES WITH CONSISTENT ORIENTATION: Load both magazines into the dual cells with a consistent orientation per unit SOP, typically rounds forward or toward weapon centerline. Confirm each magazine seats fully to the bottom of its cell.

4. POSITION AND TUNE BUNGEE RETENTION: Place both bungee cords over the tops of the loaded magazines. Adjust cord tension via the rear knot until the magazines pass an inverted shake test without shifting, yet the bungee can be swept aside with one finger. Secure the adjusted tension with a stopper knot such as a figure-eight.

5. EXECUTE THE MAGAZINE DRAW: Acquire a firm grip on the exposed magazine body with the support hand. Simultaneously sweep the bungee pull tab laterally away from the draw path using the index finger or thumb, then pull the magazine straight up and out in a smooth, continuous motion to the weapon's magazine well.

6. RE-INDEX THE MAGAZINE AFTER USE: Before re-insertion, confirm the bungee cord is clear of the pouch opening. Guide the magazine into the cell until fully seated and visually confirm proper seating if the situation permits.

7. RESTORE BUNGEE RETENTION: Manually replace the bungee cord over the re-indexed magazine to restore full retention. Do not leave the pouch unretained at any point following a reload in an active deployment environment.

8. CONDUCT PRE-DEPLOYMENT INSPECTION: Before every operation, inspect all stitching and MOLLE webbing for fraying or broken threads, check bungee cords for loss of elasticity or abrasion damage, verify all four rear snaps engage without deformation, and confirm pouch cells are free of rocks, dirt, or debris that could impede magazine seating.
