Quick Overview

The Rothco MOLLE Open Top Single Mag Pouch is a PALS-compatible rifle magazine carrier designed for operators who require immediate, silent, and unimpeded magazine access during high-tempo field operations.

The pouch uses an adjustable elastic bungee cord as its primary retention mechanism, with a non-slip pull tab that enables consistent one-handed operation under stress, with gloves, or in wet conditions. The open-top configuration eliminates flap-closure manipulation, prioritizing draw speed over environmental protection. Bungee tension is user-adjustable to balance magazine security against draw speed depending on the operational scenario.

Mounting is accomplished via two rear MOLLE straps that interweave through PALS webbing in an alternating pattern, secured by heavy-duty bottom snaps. This interweave method is critical to pouch stability and prevents shifting during dynamic movement. The pouch is compatible with any PALS-compliant platform including plate carriers, chest rigs, and modular belts.

Three rows of front-face PALS webbing enable vertical stacking of secondary pouches, including pistol magazine carriers, multitool pouches, and tourniquet holders, preserving horizontal loadout space. Readiness requires pre-operational inspection of straps, snaps, and bungee elasticity, as well as an inversion test after any tension adjustment or magazine change. The bungee cord is a consumable component and must be replaced when elasticity is lost.

Field Application Steps

1. SELECT MOUNTING LOCATION: Identify a position on your PALS platform that allows for an ergonomic, repeatable draw stroke. For most right-handed operators, this is the left side of the front plate bag or the left side of a battle belt.

2. WEAVE MOLLE STRAPS: Align the pouch with the desired PALS grid and weave each of the two rear MOLLE straps through the first row of platform webbing, then through the first row on the back of the pouch. Continue the alternating interweave pattern through all available webbing rows.

3. SECURE BOTTOM SNAPS: Pull the end of each strap taut and fasten the snap until you hear and feel a positive, audible click. Verify the pouch is secure with minimal play by pulling the pouch firmly in multiple directions.

4. INSERT MAGAZINE: Insert a fully loaded AR/M4-pattern or AK-pattern magazine into the main compartment. Orient rounds forward or rearward based on your preferred reload technique.

5. SET BUNGEE TENSION: Position the bungee cord over the top of the seated magazine and adjust the cord lock at the rear to your required tension level. Use high tension for airborne, fast-roping, or obstacle course scenarios. Use medium or low tension for direct action or competitive scenarios where draw speed is the priority.

6. CONDUCT INVERSION TEST: Don your full kit with the magazine inserted, then jump in place and lean forward aggressively. The magazine must remain fully seated throughout. If it shifts or falls, increase bungee tension and repeat the test until retention is confirmed.

7. EXECUTE RELOAD SEQUENCE: When a reload is required, establish a firm grip on the exposed portion of the magazine with your support hand, use your thumb or index finger to sweep the non-slip pull tab clear of the magazine, then draw the magazine vertically in a smooth, powerful motion until it is fully clear of the pouch. Rotate and guide the magazine into the weapon's magazine well to complete the reload.

8. STACK SECONDARY POUCHES (OPTIONAL): Select a low-profile MOLLE-compatible pouch such as a pistol magazine carrier, multitool pouch, or tourniquet holder. Attach it to the front-face PALS webbing using the same interweaving technique used to mount the primary pouch, then verify the stacked configuration does not interfere with the rifle magazine grip or draw path.

9. CONDUCT PRE-OPERATIONAL INSPECTION: Before each deployment, visually and physically inspect the rear MOLLE straps for fraying or sun damage, actuate all snaps to confirm positive engagement, stretch the bungee cord to confirm proper retraction, and inspect all stitching and seams for tears or abrasion.

10. PERFORM POST-MISSION MAINTENANCE: Remove loose debris with a stiff brush. For heavy soiling, hand wash with mild detergent and lukewarm water. Air dry completely in a shaded, well-ventilated area away from direct heat or sunlight, which degrades both the nylon fabric and the elastic cord.
