Quick Overview

A universal radio retention pouch is a MOLLE-compatible load-bearing equipment accessory that securely mounts and retains a handheld communications device on a tactical vest, plate carrier, duty belt, or pack for law enforcement, military, and public safety operators.

The pouch relies on two core retention systems working in tandem. Expandable elastic side panels provide constant lateral compression, conforming automatically to the device's width to prevent horizontal shift and rattle during dynamic movement. An adjustable elastic cord closure routes over the top of the radio and secures via a hook-and-loop tab to the front of the pouch, providing primary vertical retention against ejection during running, jumping, or prone movement. Effectiveness is directly dependent on correct operator setup and regular inspection, not on a positive-locking mechanism.

Mounting is achieved through dual 4-inch MOLLE straps on the rear of the pouch, woven through PALS webbing in an alternating Gear to Pouch to Gear sequence and secured with metal snap closures. Correct weaving is non-negotiable for pouch stability. An improperly woven attachment creates a snag hazard and creates a significant probability of equipment loss during strenuous activity.

A critical operator responsibility is confirming that neither the pouch body nor the retention cord inadvertently depresses the Push-to-Talk button, emergency button, or control knobs on the radio. A hot mic compromises operational security. This pouch is not a substitute for a device-specific, positive-locking holster in high-risk duty applications such as airborne operations.

Field Application Steps

1. SELECT MOUNTING LOCATION: Identify a viable position on the PALS grid of your vest, belt, or pack, with the support-side cummerbund being a standard choice. Confirm the selected position allows unrestricted movement and does not interfere with magazines, secondary weapon, or other critical equipment.

2. WEAVE THE MOLLE STRAPS: Unsnap both MOLLE straps and begin at the top row of PALS webbing. Pass the straps behind the first row of webbing on your gear, then forward through the first ladder loop on the rear of the pouch, continuing the alternating sequence (Gear to Pouch to Gear) until all webbing is utilized, with the strap ends terminating on the gear side.

3. SECURE AND VERIFY MOUNTING: Firmly close the metal snaps on both MOLLE straps. Grasp the pouch and attempt to shift it both vertically and horizontally. If any meaningful play is present, the weaving procedure was performed incorrectly and must be fully repeated before proceeding.

4. INSERT THE RADIO: Release the elastic cord closure and insert the radio antenna-end first. Ensure the device is fully seated at the bottom of the pouch before proceeding to cord placement.

5. ROUTE THE RETENTION CORD: Route the elastic cord over the top of the radio. Where the radio's controls permit, route the cord between volume and channel knobs to prevent accidental adjustment and establish a more secure anchor point.

6. CONDUCT THE CONTROL INTERFERENCE CHECK: Before tensioning the cord, verify that neither the pouch body nor the retention cord depresses the PTT button, the emergency button, or any function knobs. A hot mic compromises operational security and an inaccessible control compromises communication.

7. TENSION AND SECURE THE CORD: Pull the elastic cord to a firm tension and press the hook-and-loop tab squarely onto the front loop field. Tension must be sufficient to prevent any vertical movement of the radio while still permitting deliberate one-hand release.

8. CONDUCT THE DYNAMIC RETENTION TEST: Perform a series of realistic movements including jogging in place, dropping to a kneeling position, and twisting the torso. The radio must remain fully secure throughout all movement. If any shift or partial ejection occurs, return to Step 5 and adjust cord tension.

9. CONDUCT THE DEPLOYMENT DRILL: Using your support hand only, practice releasing the hook-and-loop tab and drawing the radio. The action should be deliberate but consistently achievable with one hand. Repeat until the motion is reliable and repeatable under stress.

10. CONDUCT THE RE-STOW DRILL: Practice re-inserting the radio and re-securing the retention cord, ideally using one hand. Adjust cord tension as necessary to achieve the operational balance between high retention and smooth accessibility before committing to the final setup for deployment.
