Quick Overview

The Rothco Heavy-Duty Rubberized Poncho is a .33mm PVC/rubber waterproof garment designed for static and low-activity operators who require durable, sustained protection from heavy rain, wind, and salt spray during extended field exposure.

The poncho's 70% PVC and 30% rubber shell construction delivers absolute waterproofing with superior flexibility and tear resistance compared to pure PVC alternatives. At .33mm thickness, it resists wind flap to reduce noise signature and maintain coverage integrity. The integrated hood requires no complex adjustments, and the 50" x 80" rectangular dimensions accommodate a fully equipped operator plus load-bearing equipment. Side snap closures run the full length of both sides and, when engaged from the axilla downward, seal against wind-driven rain ingress, which is the primary failure point of open-sided designs.

This garment is a non-breathable vapor barrier, which makes deployment context critical to operator safety. Strenuous activity causes rapid perspiration buildup against the skin, creating risk of heat injury during exertion and accelerated hypothermia once activity ceases. Authorized roles include guard and observation posts, maritime and vehicle checkpoints, and industrial job sites in heavy precipitation. High-exertion movement, stealth operations, and proximity to open flames or moving machinery are outside the safe operational envelope of this equipment.

Field sustainment requires air drying completely before storage, cleaning with water and mild soap only, and quarterly inspection of the shell, liner bond, and all snap closures. Small punctures are repairable with vinyl/PVC patch adhesive. Significant delamination or structural damage requires full unit replacement to maintain waterproof readiness.

Field Application Steps

1. PRE-DEPLOYMENT INSPECTION: Remove the poncho from packaging and lay it flat. Conduct a visual sweep for cracks, tears, or delamination between the rubberized shell and polyester lining, then actuate each snap closure along both sides to confirm positive engagement and release.

2. UNFOLD AND ORIENT: Fully unfold the poncho and identify the centrally located hood opening. Confirm the polyester lining faces inward before donning.

3. DON THE PONCHO: Pass your head through the hood opening. If wearing a helmet, remove it first, don the poncho, then replace the helmet over the hood.

4. SET COVERAGE: Allow the poncho to drape evenly over the torso, front and back, with the 80" length running front-to-back for maximum coverage. Ensure the rear hangs freely over any packs or load-bearing vests without binding.

5. SECURE SNAP CLOSURES: Bring the left and right edges together. Starting at the axilla, align and firmly press each snap working downward along both sides. Confirm all snaps are fully engaged to seal against wind-driven rain ingress.

6. ADJUST HOOD FOR SITUATIONAL AWARENESS: Position the integrated hood to maximize peripheral vision while maintaining a seal against the neck and face. Balance weather protection against your ability to see and hear your environment.

7. DOFF AND SHED WATER: To remove, systematically disengage all snap closures in sequence, then pull the poncho up and over the head. Before entering a vehicle or shelter, hold the poncho away from your body and shake vigorously to shed surface water.

8. STOW AND DRY: Fold or roll the poncho for temporary stowage. At the first available opportunity, unfold it completely and hang it open in a well-ventilated area to air dry fully before long-term storage, preventing mildew and material degradation.
