Quick Overview

The Rothco Tactical Breakaway Pouch is a MOLLE-compatible IFAK carriage system used by law enforcement, military personnel, first responders, and prepared civilians to provide immediate, ground-level access to life-saving medical supplies during high-stakes trauma incidents.

The pouch mounts to plate carriers, tactical vests, belts, or vehicle panels via a semi-rigid MOLLE backing plate woven through PALS webbing. Its core capability is a rip-away design: a hook-and-loop panel bonds the pouch to the backing plate, and a secondary top strap with a side-release buckle provides retention against accidental detachment during dynamic movement. When deployment is required, the operator defeats the buckle and pulls the grab handle to separate the pouch in one deliberate motion, bringing all medical tools directly into the workspace.

Internally, the pouch features a tri-fold deployment design with 13 elastic straps across three panels, three open pockets, and one zippered mesh pocket. Contents are staged in C-A-B-C order: Catastrophic Hemorrhage, Airway, Breathing, Circulation. This organization eliminates searching under stress and provides immediate visual identification of all supplies the moment the pouch is opened flat.

Operator readiness depends entirely on training and content selection, not the pouch itself. The 600D polyester shell is water-resistant but not waterproof, and the hook-and-loop interface can be compromised by mud or sand. Pre-mission inspection, regular dry-fire drills, and use of high-quality medical components from reputable suppliers are non-negotiable requirements for maintaining a field-ready IFAK.

Field Application Steps

1. MOUNT THE BACKING PLATE: Weave the two vertical snap-straps of the MOLLE backing plate through the PALS webbing on your plate carrier, vest, or belt. Snap them closed and pull firmly on the platform to confirm there is no excessive play or shifting.

2. ATTACH AND SEAT THE POUCH: Press the main pouch body firmly onto the hook-and-loop field on the backing plate face, ensuring full surface contact across the panel. Route the top strap over the pouch and engage the side-release buckle until it clicks into positive lock.

3. STAGE CONTENTS IN C-A-B-C ORDER: Open the pouch completely by pulling both zipper pulls to their terminal point and unfolding the tri-fold design flat. Load medical components into the 13 internal elastic loops across all three panels in sequence: Catastrophic Hemorrhage controls first, then Airway, Breathing, and Circulation items. Place loose or small items in open pockets and use the zippered mesh pocket for components that must not fall free, such as gloves, tape, and bandages.

4. CONDUCT PRE-MISSION INSPECTION: Verify snap-straps are secure and the backing plate has no excessive movement. Test the side-release buckle for positive lock and inspect the top strap for fraying. Separate and re-attach the pouch to confirm the hook-and-loop surface provides strong, clean adhesion. Check zippers for smooth operation and inspect the pouch shell for rips or punctures.

5. DEFEAT SECONDARY RETENTION: When a casualty event occurs, announce "Applying self-aid" or equivalent and locate the side-release buckle by feel. Depress both sides of the buckle simultaneously to disengage it and discard or release the top strap.

6. EXECUTE THE BREAKAWAY: Grip the nylon grab handle at the top of the pouch firmly. In one deliberate, forceful motion, pull the pouch down and away from the MOLLE backing plate. The hook-and-loop will release and the pouch will be free in your hands.

7. ESTABLISH A WORKSPACE: Bring the detached pouch to the front of your body or place it on the ground directly adjacent to the injury site. Positioning the pouch within your direct line of sight minimizes unnecessary movement and keeps all supplies immediately accessible.

8. DEPLOY CONTENTS AND ADMINISTER AID: Pull both zipper pulls to fully open the pouch and unfold the tri-fold design so it lays flat. Retrieve the highest-priority item appropriate to the injury, apply intervention according to your level of training, and leave the opened pouch with remaining contents displayed for arriving responders.
