Quick Overview

The Rothco U.S. Wool Blanket is a general-purpose thermal regulation and environmental protection tool used by operators, outdoor personnel, and emergency preparedness-minded individuals in temperate to cold field conditions where sustained body heat retention is critical.

The blanket's 70% virgin wool and 30% synthetic fiber blend delivers reliable insulation capability in conditions where most materials fail. Wool's natural fiber structure traps air to retain heat, and critically, it maintains insulative properties even when damp, unlike cotton. The synthetic component adds tensile strength and abrasion resistance, making this a field-ready platform suited for static insulation in vehicles, shelters, and fixed positions. Its 62" x 80" dimensions support personal wrap, ground pad, and improvised shelter configurations using standard cordage.

Wool's inherent fire-retardant properties provide an additional safety layer in field environments. The fiber will char and smolder rather than ignite and spread flame when exposed to embers or sparks, making it appropriate for deployment near campfires or field heaters and as an emergency smothering tool for small, incipient-stage fires. Personnel must understand that fire-retardant does not mean fireproof, and sustained flame contact will eventually cause the blanket to burn.

From a readiness and sustainment standpoint, this blanket requires proper storage and inspection protocols to remain mission-capable. Store clean and completely dry in a vacuum-sealed or waterproof dry bag to prevent mildew and pest damage. Pre-deployment inspection should confirm the absence of holes, fraying, mold, and foreign object contamination. Detailed cleaning follows a gentle cold-water machine wash with wool-formulated detergent, a fabric softener rinse, and low-heat or line drying to preserve fiber loft and insulative efficiency.

Field Application Steps

1. CONFIRM SHELTER: Remain inside your vehicle or established shelter to block wind and precipitation before deploying any insulation layer. The vehicle structure is your first line of environmental protection.

2. RETRIEVE AND INSPECT: Pull the wool blanket from its stored location and shake out debris. Inspect for moisture, holes, fraying, mold, or foreign object contamination before use.

3. ISOLATE FROM GROUND: Place floor mats, a backpack, or any available non-conductive material beneath you on the seat or ground. Cold surfaces draw heat conductively, and isolation is required before applying the blanket.

4. EXECUTE MUMMY WRAP: Drape the blanket lengthwise over your entire body. Pull the top edge over your head to form a hood that covers the neck and head, leaving your airway fully unobstructed.

5. SECURE THE CORE: Cross the sides of the blanket over your chest, tucking one side under the other to seal the insulation layer and minimize convective heat loss through gaps.

6. SEAL LEGS AND FEET: Tuck the lower portion of the blanket under your legs and feet to create a closed warm air pocket. Eliminate drafts at all entry points to maximize thermal retention capability.

7. AUGMENT SHELTER IF NEEDED: If a window is broken or compromised, fold the blanket and wedge it firmly into the opening to block wind and precipitation from entering the vehicle.

8. RIG EXTERNAL SHELTER IF REQUIRED: If external shelter is needed, establish a ridgeline with cordage between two anchor points, drape the blanket over the ridgeline, and secure the corners to the ground in an A-frame or lean-to configuration.

9. MONITOR AIRWAY: If sleeping or resting with the blanket covering your head, confirm at each transition that the wrap is not restricting breathing. Adjust tension as needed to maintain a clear airway.

10. CONDUCT POST-DEPLOYMENT INSPECTION: After each field use, inspect the blanket for damage, contamination, and moisture before returning it to storage. Do not store damp. Clean per protocol before caching.
