Quick Overview

The Rothco Undercover Shoulder Holster is a deep concealment carry system designed for plainclothes operators, law enforcement personnel, and concealed carry practitioners who require reliable firearm access in low-visibility, seated, or vehicular environments where belt-mounted holsters are impractical.

The holster is constructed from 600 Denier Polyester with an inner leatherette trim that protects the firearm's finish and provides a low-friction draw surface. It is available in 4-inch and 5-inch configurations to accommodate compact through full-size pistol frames. The padded shoulder strap distributes the weapon's weight across the shoulder to reduce fatigue during extended wear, and an adjustable belt tie-down strap anchors the system to prevent holster rise or forward swing during the draw stroke.

Retention is provided by a hook-and-loop thumb snap, which constitutes Level I retention only. This system relies on concealment as its primary security layer and is not rated for open carry or high-risk scenarios involving physical altercations. The thumb snap must be adjusted to break cleanly with a single firm thumb press while remaining secure against incidental dislodging during movement drills.

Deployment readiness requires consistent dry-fire practice before carrying a loaded firearm. The cross-draw stroke is not intuitive compared to a standard belt holster, and the skill is perishable. Pre-deployment inspection must cover stitching integrity, hardware function, retention snap condition, and tie-down security. Cleaning requires only a damp cloth with mild soap, and the holster must air dry completely before use.

Field Application Steps

1. DON THE EMPTY HOLSTER: Place the holster over your support-side shoulder (left shoulder for right-handed operators) with the holster body resting high in the armpit and the grip oriented for a cross-draw presentation.

2. ADJUST THE SHOULDER STRAP: Set strap tension so the holster sits firmly in the armpit without shifting during movement. The grip must be accessible without the operator reaching across the body at an awkward angle.

3. ATTACH THE BELT TIE-DOWN STRAP: Connect the tie-down strap to your pants belt and adjust for minimal slack while standing. This prevents upward holster lift and forward swing during an aggressive draw stroke, which are critical factors for draw consistency.

4. PRACTICE COVER GARMENT CLEARANCE: Use your support hand to sweep or unbutton your cover garment repeatedly until the motion is fluid and automatic. Practice exclusively with the specific jacket or shirt you intend to carry with, as garment type directly affects draw reliability.

5. INTEGRATE AN UNLOADED FIREARM AND SET RETENTION: Insert a cleared, unloaded firearm fully into the holster body. Adjust the hook-and-loop thumb snap over the rear of the slide or hammer until it is snug enough to resist dislodging but breaks cleanly with a single firm thumb press.

6. CONDUCT MOVEMENT DRILLS: With the unloaded firearm holstered, perform bending, jogging in place, and vehicle entry and exit. The firearm must remain fully secured throughout. Re-evaluate all strap adjustments if any instability is detected.

7. EXECUTE THE LIVE DRAW STROKE: Clear the cover garment with your support hand, drive your dominant thumb down onto the retention snap to break it, establish a full firing grip on the pistol while it remains in the holster, then draw straight out horizontally. As the muzzle clears the holster, rotate toward the threat, build a two-handed grip, and press out to target.

8. RE-HOLSTER SAFELY: Maintain visual threat awareness and do not look down at the holster. Return the firearm to a compressed ready position, use the support hand to clear the cover garment and expose the holster opening, carefully guide the muzzle into the holster body and confirm full seating, then re-secure the thumb snap and reset the cover garment.

9. CONDUCT PRE-DEPLOYMENT INSPECTION: Before each carry, inspect all stitched seams for fraying, verify all adjustment buckles and slides are intact, confirm the hook-and-loop retention surfaces engage securely, and ensure the belt tie-down and all attachment points are fully secured. A worn retention snap is a critical failure point and must be addressed before deployment.
