Quick Overview

The R&B Fabrications XL Biker's Trunk Bag is a high-capacity, bicycle-mounted medical storage system used by paramedics, EMTs, and public safety operators to deploy oxygen delivery or bulk trauma supplies into environments where vehicle access is blocked or delayed.

The bag operates in two mutually exclusive configurations. In the Oxygen Delivery Platform configuration, the internal polypropylene shell secures a single 'C' size oxygen cylinder with regulator and delivery adjuncts, making it the primary design function for ALS-level bicycle response. In the Bulk Trauma and Supply Carrier configuration, the shell is removed or repurposed as a vertical divider, allowing the 18" by 5.5" by 18" main compartment to carry large dressings, IV kits, splinting materials, or a complete BVM assembly. Operators select one configuration before deployment and do not mix profiles.

Mounting is achieved through a two-stage retention system. Velcro hook-and-loop straps serve as primary attachment to the rear rack platform, while side-release buckles provide secondary retention around the rack's support struts. The side-release buckles enable rapid one-handed detachment of the entire bag for direct carry to a patient's side without unloading individual contents. A fully loaded bag can exceed 20 lbs, significantly raising the bicycle's center of gravity and affecting braking, cornering, and low-speed stability.

Sustainment requires post-mission decontamination with soap and water or an approved departmental cleaning agent, followed by complete air drying before restocking. Monthly inspection of the Velcro straps, side-release buckles, YKK zippers, Cordura body, reflective trim, and polypropylene shell ensures the system remains field-ready. Long-term storage requires a clean, dry location away from direct sunlight, stored empty and uncompressed.

Field Application Steps

1. SELECT MISSION CONFIGURATION: Determine your deployment profile before loading the bag. Choose either the Oxygen Delivery Platform configuration or the Bulk Trauma and Supply Carrier configuration. These are mutually exclusive and cannot be combined.

2. CONFIGURE THE MAIN COMPARTMENT FOR O2 DEPLOYMENT: Place the polypropylene shell into the main compartment and seat the 'C' size oxygen cylinder securely in the shell with the regulator attached and the valve in the OFF position. Pack delivery adjuncts such as masks and tubing around the cylinder to minimize movement during transit.

3. CONFIGURE THE MAIN COMPARTMENT FOR TRAUMA DEPLOYMENT: Remove the polypropylene shell or position it as a vertical divider. Load the heaviest items at the bottom to maintain a low center of gravity. Stage supplies by order of anticipated use, with hemorrhage control items positioned on top for immediate access.

4. LOAD THE TOP POCKET: Place immediate-action items including gloves, trauma shears, and a penlight into the 12" by 12" by 2" top pocket. These items must be accessible without opening the main compartment.

5. MOUNT THE BAG TO THE BICYCLE RACK: Center the bag on the rear rack top platform with the long axis parallel to the bicycle frame. Route the Velcro straps under the rack platform, pull tight with no slack, and secure them back to themselves. Secure the side-release buckle straps around the rack's support struts for secondary retention.

6. CONFIRM MOUNTING SECURITY: Vigorously pull the bag side-to-side and up-and-down. The bag must be completely immobile with no shift, rock, or slide. An improperly secured bag is a critical failure point and a direct safety hazard to the operator.

7. CONDUCT A DYNAMIC HANDLING CHECK: Ride 20 to 30 feet in a controlled area before responding. Assess how the loaded bag affects balance, braking distance, and cornering. Operators must complete this check with a fully weighted bag before initial operational deployment.

8. EXECUTE ON-SCENE OPERATIONS: Dismount and stabilize the bicycle before accessing equipment. If the patient location allows, draw supplies directly from the bag while it remains on the rack. If the patient is away from the bicycle, release both side-release buckles, leave the Velcro attached to the rack, and carry the entire bag to the patient's side.

9. CONDUCT POST-MISSION DECONTAMINATION: Empty the bag fully and inspect for contamination. Clean the exterior with soap and water or an approved departmental cleaning agent. Do not machine wash.

10. DRY AND RESTOCK: Allow the bag to air dry completely before restocking or storing. Restock all used supplies per your unit's inventory list and return each item to its designated location for predictable access on the next deployment.
