Quick Overview

The Rothco G.I. Style Aluminum Canteen is a 1-quart individual water carriage system used by operators in field, tactical, and emergency preparedness contexts where durable hydration transport and field-expedient water disinfection capability are required.

The canteen's 100% aluminum construction is its defining operational advantage. Unlike plastic canteens, the aluminum body can be placed near coals or suspended over a low flame to bring water to a full rolling boil, enabling field-expedient disinfection when no potable source is available. This capability makes it a primary survival tool, not merely a transport vessel. The system holds 1 quart (32 oz) and attaches via its polyester cover to pistol belts, rucksacks, or ALICE clip-compatible load-bearing gear.

The cover assembly extends the canteen's operational value beyond simple carriage. A felt lining bonded to the interior of the polyester cover provides passive thermal insulation and enables evaporative cooling in hot or arid environments: saturate the cover, wring out excess water, and airflow will draw heat away from the aluminum body as you move. The two-button metal snap closure secures the canteen during dynamic movement, though operators should be aware that unsnapping produces an audible signature and should muffle the closure with a hand in tactical environments.

Readiness requires deliberate sustainment between deployments. The canteen must be stored completely dry to prevent mold and bacterial growth, hung upside down with the cap removed until fully aired out. In sub-freezing conditions, fill to no more than 90% capacity and keep the cap slightly loose to allow for ice expansion and prevent rupture.

Field Application Steps

1. PRE-DEPLOYMENT INSPECTION: Check the canteen body for significant dents, cracks, or punctures. Fill it completely, secure the cap, and invert it to confirm the gasket creates a watertight seal with no leakage.

2. SANITIZE AND FILL: Ensure the canteen is cleaned and sanitized from prior use before filling. Fill with 1 quart of known potable water, or limit fill to 90% capacity if freezing conditions are anticipated.

3. MOUNT TO KIT: Place the canteen in the cover and fasten both metal snaps firmly. Attach the cover to load-bearing equipment on the non-dominant side hip for reliable one-handed access during movement.

4. SELECT A WATER SOURCE FOR DISINFECTION: When field-sourcing water, collect from the clearest, fastest-moving section of the stream to minimize sediment load before boiling.

5. REMOVE THE CAP BEFORE APPLYING HEAT: Completely remove the plastic cap and retention strap assembly from the canteen before any heat is applied. Failure to remove the cap risks a pressure explosion. Failure to remove the strap results in melting.

6. APPLY HEAT: Place the uncapped canteen upright near hot coals or suspend it over a low flame. Do not place it directly into raging flames due to superheating risk.

7. BOIL TO DISINFECT: Bring the water to a full rolling boil and maintain that boil for a minimum of 1 minute. At altitudes above 6,500 ft (2,000 m), maintain the boil for a minimum of 3 minutes.

8. COOL BEFORE HANDLING OR DRINKING: Do not touch the canteen with bare hands after boiling. Use gloves, a multi-tool, or thick cloth to move it away from the heat source. Allow the canteen to cool completely before drinking or re-attaching the cap.

9. EXECUTE EVAPORATIVE COOLING (HOT ENVIRONMENTS): Submerge the entire canteen cover in water until the felt lining is fully saturated. Wring out excess water, place the canteen back inside the wet cover, and allow airflow during movement to draw heat away from the aluminum body and cool the contents.

10. POST-MISSION CLEANING: Empty all remaining water immediately after the mission. Wash the interior with mild soap and warm water using a bottle brush, then periodically sanitize with a baking soda solution or non-chlorine cleaning tablet. Rinse thoroughly multiple times to remove all cleaning agents.

11. INSPECT THE GASKET: Remove the cap gasket after cleaning and inspect it for cracks, dirt, or signs of perishing. Clean it and reseat it firmly before storage.

12. DRY AND STORE: Hang the canteen upside down with the cap removed until the interior is 100% dry. Store with the cap off or very loosely threaded in a cool, dry location away from direct sunlight to preserve material integrity.
