This kit delivers BLS-level capability across five operational categories: moderate bleeding control, minor wound and burn care, sprain and strain management, hypothermia mitigation, and responder protection. Its 120 components are organized across 9 internal pockets for staged deployment, enabling rapid access under stress. PPE, trauma pads, and gauze are prioritized in the most accessible pockets per the kit's staging protocol. The carrier system is a 100 Denier Cordura bag with 4 zippered mesh and 5 nylon pockets, transportable by shoulder strap or handle.

Bleeding control capability centers on the Hema-Seal 8x10 Trauma Pad, two 5x9 trauma pads, and 20 sterile 4x4 gauze pads, supported by 2-inch sterile gauze rolls and triangular bandages for dressing securement. The kit also carries burn gel packets for minor thermal burns, a 4oz eyewash for irrigation, and antiseptic wipes for cleaning intact skin around wounds. Forceps are included for superficial debris removal only. An emergency blanket and chemical cold pack extend the kit's environmental management capability.

This kit has a defined and documented limitation: it does not contain a commercial tourniquet, hemostatic gauze, or chest seals, and is not rated for massive life-threatening hemorrhage. Responders operating in higher-risk environments should augment with a C-A-T or SOFTT-W tourniquet, vented chest seals, and hemostatic gauze as addressed in Section 5.3 of the field manual.

Field Application Steps

1. SCENE ASSESSMENT AND PPE: Confirm the scene is safe before approaching, including verifying that any machinery is powered down. Don nitrile exam gloves immediately upon opening the responder bag before making any patient contact.

2. CASUALTY ASSESSMENT AND EXPOSURE: Direct the casualty to sit or lie down to stabilize their position. Use the 7.25-inch shears to cut away clothing and fully expose the wound, then confirm the bleeding type as moderate and steady, not pulsating arterial hemorrhage.

3. BLEEDING CONTROL: Apply a 5x9 trauma pad or multiple 4x4 sterile gauze pads directly to the wound and hold firm, continuous direct pressure for a minimum of 3 to 5 minutes. If the dressing soaks through, apply a second dressing on top without removing the first.

4. SECURE THE DRESSING: Wrap the dressing with a 2-inch sterile gauze roll, snug but not restrictive. Verify distal circulation by checking capillary refill and pulse, then secure the wrap with the triple cut adhesive tape roll.

5. ASSESS FOR SHOCK: Check the casualty for signs of shock including pale skin, rapid pulse, and confusion. If shock indicators are present, position the casualty flat and apply the 52x84 inch emergency blanket for full-body coverage to mitigate heat loss.

6. WOUND CLEANING FOR MINOR INJURIES: For abrasions and minor lacerations, clean intact skin around the wound using alcohol wipes or povidone-iodine wipes. Do not apply antiseptics directly into open wounds. Use the 4oz eyewash for gentle wound irrigation instead.

7. SPLINTER AND SURFACE DEBRIS REMOVAL: Use forceps only to remove large, visible splinters or surface debris. Do not probe the wound or attempt to extract embedded objects, as probing can introduce infection and damage underlying nerves or vessels.

8. COLD PACK APPLICATION FOR SPRAINS AND STRAINS: Fold and shake the 4x5 chemical cold pack to activate it. Wrap the cold pack in cloth before applying to the affected area. Do not allow direct skin contact with the pack.

9. EMS HANDOVER AND DECONTAMINATION: Report the mechanism of injury, estimated blood loss, and all treatments rendered to arriving EMS personnel. Collect all used and contaminated materials, including bloody gloves and used dressings, into the 24x24 biohazard bag, then seal and dispose per local protocol.
