Wound care protocol requires donning nitrile exam gloves before any patient contact, applying direct pressure with sterile gauze, cleaning the skin around the wound with a BZK antiseptic or castile soap towelette, and securing the dressing with conforming gauze while verifying capillary refill. Field Application Steps

1. SCENE SAFETY AND INITIAL ASSESSMENT: Confirm your position is secure before opening the kit. Identify all active threats, both medical and environmental, and prioritize them by long-term lethality. In cold-weather scenarios, environmental exposure is often the greater sustained threat.

2. DON PPE BEFORE PATIENT CONTACT: Open the kit and immediately put on the nitrile exam gloves. Do not make contact with a patient or any wound before gloves are on. This prevents cross-contamination in both directions.

3. ESTABLISH DIRECT PRESSURE ON THE WOUND: Instruct the patient to apply pressure with their own hand while you prepare your dressing. Transfer pressure to a 3"x3" sterile gauze pad and maintain firm, consistent contact against the wound.

4. CLEAN THE WOUND PERIMETER: Use a BZK antiseptic towelette or castile soap towelette to clean the intact skin around the wound. Do not scrub inside the laceration or pour antiseptic directly into deep wounds.

5. APPLY ANTIBIOTIC OINTMENT AND DRESS THE WOUND: Apply a thin layer of triple antibiotic ointment to a fresh sterile gauze pad and place it over the wound. Secure the dressing with the 2" conforming gauze roll, wrapping without excessive tension.

6. VERIFY CIRCULATION AFTER DRESSING: Check capillary refill in the fingers distal to the wrap immediately after securing the dressing. If refill is delayed beyond two seconds or the patient reports numbness, loosen the wrap and re-secure.

7. DEPLOY ENVIRONMENTAL PROTECTION: Retrieve the emergency sleeping bag and unfold it carefully to avoid punctures. Place at-risk occupants inside and use clothing or vehicle seats as a ground barrier, as the mylar bag provides no insulation from ground contact.

8. ESTABLISH A RATIONING PLAN FOR FOOD AND WATER: Do not consume emergency food bars or water packets immediately. Ration based on a worst-case rescue timeline: one food bar and one 4-oz water packet per person for the first 12 hours, adjusting only if signs of dehydration or hypoglycemia are present.

9. KEEP IGNITION CAPABILITY ACCESSIBLE: Secure the waterproof matches in a reachable location for warmth, signaling, or boiling water if a container is available. Do not attempt to start a fire inside a vehicle.

10. MONITOR CONTINUOUSLY: Check the wound for renewed bleeding at regular intervals. Assess all occupants for hypothermia indicators: shivering, confusion, and lethargy. Reassess your rationing plan and overall situation as conditions change and adjust your protocol accordingly.
